I just read that overwintering with trout helps maintain your bass? I think I read it in a thread about crawfish stocking. Can someone go into a little more detail about overwintering with trout? Very interested. Especially if they grow fast enough to eat. I live in Trinity County in Eastern Texas. Not sure if the location will play a role in stocking trout. Pond is 3 acres and appox 15' when full

I think there are several factors to consider before you do something like that. One, you would need to stock trout (I assume rainbows) that are small enough to be eaten by the size bass you have in your pond. Second, that the water in your pond is cold enough. Do you think the pond will cool down enough in Spring (the town, not the season)? Third, most trout you can buy are probably feed trained because they were raised in a fish hatchery. Do you have a feeder? Fourth, those would be some expensive bass snacks, are you up for that? I'm sure I missed a few other factors as well.
I gotta admit it is an intriguing idea. Some of those big bass factory lakes in California stock rainbows by the millions and the bass seem to love it and they get huge. It would also be fun to catch a few trout and have them for supper. Maybe some winter I'll try it, I don't think this year though.

I've done it, Fishindude, over in Polk county. Interesting thing to do.
You can order all different sizes...small ones for bass and larger ones for you to catch. I got some 2 to 3 pounders and mostly small ones.
Here's what I learned:
1) they will definitely add weight to your bass...especially the larger bass over 6 or 7 pounds.
2) the trout can be entertaining winter fishing...but if you have ever caught wild trout, then you will be disappointed by these farm raised fish. Not especially good fighters and not very smart at all.
3) trout are absolutely devestating on bluegill. They are very efficient predators on bluegill. So, the weights you add to your bass may in fact be lost by having your bluegill population reduced. The only way I would recommend winter trout stocking in our East Texas ponds is if you plan to tag team with Tilapia in spring. The Tilapia will help your bluegill recover. Otherwise, I wouldn't do it.
4) its expensive....more so than a trip to Arkansas or New Mexico for some wild trout.
I did it once and probably will not ever do it again based on the above mentioned factors.

thanks for the info. I have not yet checked on the prices, but from what you guys are telling me, they will cost me one of my arms. I need both arms for fishing, so no trout, unless the state reads off the right numbers.
