Thinking of buying a cheaper kayak to take to some of these small ponds and tanks in the metroplex when I dont want to drag my bass boat out...my question is what happens when mr snake decides he wants in that boat? Other than obviously hitting it with the paddle have you guys had trouble with snakes trying to get in the yak with you?

Beat the heck out of it with your paddle and rig it up on a 3/4 ounce weedless jig. Then, parlay it into a 23" plus largemouth.

Make sure to get pictures and include a well written account of your experience. Then post it on TFF.

Who knows...

You might even wind up in Field and Stream Magazine. wink

P.S. Don't bother unless it's of the poisonous variety.

There are very few poisonous snakes in Texas. Learn them.

If you just slap the water near them with your paddle they will take off. Never been and issue for me.

+1 on the don't worry

-1 on the catch em live and thread them on a hook advice as you already sound skittish, Y'n Y tries to touch them with his toungue as a sort of a southern, 'Texas style' pump handle, if you can follow the vague logic.

gnats ruined a trip or me this year.
freaking gnats.

we always try to find snakes, learning to see them is a skill worth having

Unless you are wearing a grass skirt and sleeping in a ditch and eating only road kill, you too are part of 'the problem'.

Yeah Im not a big fan of snakes and know I already dont like the idea of one getting in my bass boat...could only imagine one getting in a kayak with as little room as there is in there... Didnt know if it was a common problem or if it really wasnt a big deal.

Never had a problem with snakes. I see them on the Texas lakes, but all I do is slap the paddle on the water and they are gone. HOWEVER, I do have scupper plugs just in case.

what are scupper plugs for? is the same thing as a drain plug? Do you mean in case you get water in the boat getting away from the snake?

Sorry totally new to any and all kayak terminology.

It a common missperception that the snakes will climb in the kayak over the side, more commonly they come up through the "scupper" holes in the bottom of the kayak!!!
