I am first time diesel owner and still have lots to learn. I need your help!

Can anyone tell me what are the 3 things one can do to improve diesel effiency on Diesel trucks?

I am not looking for the common sense stuff like lay your foot off the gas, maintain tune ups, tires properly inflated, use regular size tires, etc.

I want to know what are the PROVEN modifications or ADD ONS or Fuel additives, etc that I need to consider for my 2003 F250 2WD or any diesel for that matter?

Thanks!

Three things i have had done

4 inch exhaust from the turbo back

used a 6.0 transmission cooler

built transmission Bryan's truck shop Lead Hill Ark. 2 more clutches machined gears bigger torque converter hold 2 more quarts when you put it in gear you better be driving

chip but matched to the transmission

you could do more but if the air box on the 2003 is the same as 1999 7.3 it gets plenty of air

gages transmission and pyro

i like and only use the 40 extra hp on the chip,,pulls fantastic at 1900 running 70mph pulling boat,,mileage is 18.3

power service every fill up

Get an economy tune, use an additive like PS Diesel Kleen, use your block heater.

A bedcover is one add on that is a proven fuel saver.
A larger air dam at the front of the truck will help air flow.

Synthetic oil in the rear end if it does not already have it. The 75-90 weight is more fuel efficient than a heavier lube and the heavier is only needed if you pull heavy.

Hey Allison, I found a 2008 Dodge 2500 4wd with less than 10K miles on it for a fairly good price. I'm still torn about the diesel as right now all it would be pulling is my boat. What kind of mileage can I expect with nothing out of the ordinary being done?

Pulling I'm just guessing but 14 to 15 mpg.

The new Dodge is a 6.7 liter motor that won't get the mileage that the pre 2007 5.9's did.

Highway unloaded with the 3.73 gears I think 17 give or take a mpg or two would be about right.

Well, I guess the thing to consider is longevity and the mpg is still better than a comparable gas powered vehicle. Still it would take some time to recoup the cost difference, but the one I found is not significantly more expensive than a gas burner.

Ditto to all that.

Stock air box is fine unless you run a big chip with a different turbo.

Brian's tranny is the cat's meow - you'll drive your truck like a sports car afterwards.

First off you need to answer the question, what motor do you have 7.3 or 6.0 ??? Two different motors. I have owned both and can tell you what "actually" works, not what it says on the advertisement for what ever aftermarket gimmick you may have bought.

I have some guys that put the motorcraft cetane booster in and says this helps their mileage. Part # PM-22-A. It is pretty economical also. For about 7 bucks you can treat 120 gallons.
