It is too long, too sparse, and verd to wind without the "hairs"
folding forward.
Quill Body-no idea what it's used for.
Rabbit Zonkers, Crosscut--in a video was used to tie a leech
pattern. Should have gotten straight cut?
Dubbing tool-supposed to make it simple to apply the dubbing to
thread, but had no directons how to use.
Rubber legs and spinner bait skirts--- can't tie the legs to a
hook straight to save my soul.

Found a video on pseudo hackle have not watched it.
Quill bodies are good for mainly tails on small nymph patterns and segmented bodies on smaller patterns. Soak them and they can be tied in by the tips and palmered forward for a buggy looking body.

Cross cut rabbit can be palmered on for fuzzy bodies.

Dubbing Tool, surprisingly I found no videos worth linking to on an initial Google search. But there ought to be some out there.

Rubber legs, spinner skirts? Practice, practice, practice. In Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Jan Hooks was tour guide at the Alamo where she told the tour, "there are thousands and thousands of uses for corn, all of which I am going to tell you about right now". I won't do that but will advise that Google is your best friend in instances such as these.

The dubbing tool is quiet handy; you make a loop in your thread, say about 6-8 inches long,run thread back around the hook where you want the dubbing to end; then insert your dubbing tool in the bottom of the loop; it keeps the loop open; then insert dubbing and twist; insert more and twist til you get as much in the loop as you want/need. Then, palmer or wrap the dubbing on the body, up to where your thread is; wrap your thread around the thread of the dubbing loop and cut off excess; pretty simple once youve practiced a few times-p-

Keep the cross cut for making bulky bodies on your flies. It palmers and lays backwards better than zonker strips. When you do tie it in, make a tapered cut in the hide and remove the fur where the taper is, and tie it in with the fur side down.

The quill strips are great for dry fly bodies. Look at patterns by AK Best for some ideas. The quil gives the fly a nice segmented look.

What are you wanting to do with the rubber legs? Tails? Legs? Different techniques for both.


Which dubbing tool do you have?

I wonder can you tye while you are on the job? If so I can stop by when I bring your stuff and help you for a while. But they might not like that. I wish local people could get together at Academy or something. They need to sell more fly stuff, that might help them out...tyers buy products when they are tying...if the merchant has what they need. I have another local friend who ties, him and his wife...his son ties a little. We could all get together for a local tying session.

When looking for flies at the Academy in Longview I found very little of anything in the store. The BPS in Shreveport has volunteers every other Saturday to demonstrate and teach and they have a pretty good selection of materials.

I thought about practice tying in the guard shack but that would leave to much debris (feathers, fur, etc.) flying around to clean up. Sure way to relieve myself of a job I really need.

I see. Yes, Academy has a very poor selection for fly anglers and the fly dept is almost non-existent. Well I thought maybe tying would help keep you awake, and not bored out of your mind. Some jobs don't mind if you read or stuff like that.
