Went out to the ranch Sunday and didn't do as good as I normally do with the Kalin grub. Tried spinnerbaits with no luck. It was very cloudy and raining on and off through out the day. I did pretty good with 1/4oz. Ratl Traps, but had difficulty keeping them out of the shallow weeds that cover 75% of the pond. Keep hearing about swim jigs being a good option, but I dont have any and have never used them. What's a good swim jig for a beginner and whats the best trailers to use. I need something with a really slow fall!! I appreciate all feedback!!

Any jig could be a swim jig. Use a jig with an arky style head with a u tail grub for a trailer.

Jag, Crankin dave it right. Any jig can be a swim jig, but a "swim jig" is designed for just that swimming. The head shape is crucial I feel when it comes to this. Our Magician Swim jig br elite series pro Fred Roumbanis features a little different line tie. By doing this it allws the bait to plain out in the water column and this design also allows it to come through really heavy cover really well. Fred reccomend the optimum double diamon 3" swim bait, but any solid body swimbait will work well. The jig is really simple to fish just cast and reel and try and come in contact with as much cover as possible. If you have any questions feel free to ask or PM me. Hopefully I can help!

i do like the Black Angel jigs.the skirt on the Black Angel Magician swim jig has a high strand count. this gives it a little bulk and a really nice flaring action when twitched.and i love the hand tied skirt they hold up to alot of abuse...rick

I like to use the 1 ounce Booyah swim jigs with the back of a lizard or a twin tailed grub. I like the really heavy swim jigs b/c they bust right through heavy vegatation.

Hey Jagg, I just did a post about my very first jiggin experience with one of the Black Angel Swim Jigs. I may be hooked! I had a shad trailer from Lake Fork Tackle that I picked up today. Very successful :-)

I am kind of partial to jigs that have a hook eye in line with the hook shank. In my opinion, will come through the grass and just about any thing else much better than a jig with a flat eye. Only time I like this kind of hook, is on my shake heads and football jigs. My favorite all around jig is the poison tail jig I make. I do this jig 2 ways. 1 with a heavy wire Mustad Flipping Hook and also do with it a Mustad EWG Hook. Is a great all around jig and can use the same jig for pitching, flipping and swimming. If you want one strictly for casting and swimming. The one I do with the EWG hook works the best because of the keel on the hook but both will work just fine for that. EWG Hooks Flippin Hook

I fish a jig a ton but I use a COMBAT jig I really don't like swim jigs I like normal jigs they have a different action and I don't get hung up as much. Swim jigs have a very plain action plus I like to bow up fish and Combat jigs have a hook and i'm not talking about something skrawny I want HOOK. Trailers matter but I'll let ya'll figure that one out.

How 'bout a little 1/8oz arkey head flipping jig with a hefty 4/0 flipping hook? With a shortened Speed Craw (I take about 1/2" off), it has a very slow fall and is light enough that it won't bury down into the weeds. You can cast it out, let it fall, pop it up, and barely tick the weed tops with your retrieve. Or, you can swim it more steadily over the weed tops and rip it free when it touches the weeds - just like you would a trap. It's a technique we developed here at Toledo Bend for late fall post front conditions. We offer the 1/8oz size in our Original Flipping Jigs, and they're available in 66 standard colors and about any custom color you can think of. http://talonlures.com/talonseriesoriginaljig.aspx

If you wanting a trailer with some action try a SK Rage craw, for a subtle swim I like a zoom ultravibe speed worm. Generally speaking the Rage Craw is a off colored water deal and the speed worm is more for less colored water. Swimming a jigs is a great "big fish pattern" you definately want braid and a good jig, a hand tied skirt is crucial and a good trailer keeper.
