Sandbass = Whitebass
Although in far east Texas I have heard yellow bass called sandbass.
I've also heard yellow bass called bar bass and Louisiana bar bass.
I'm an old fart and have lived in Texas most of my life and white bass were always called sand bass or sandies.

I bet they call them "bar" bass because of their location during the spring chasing bait fish up into the sand bars. Hence the name bar bass and sand bass from fishing them in rivers up stream next to sand bars.

The only place I have heard of white bass being called sand bass is in north Texas.

I don't think I have ever seen a yellow bass.

It's a Dallas/Okie thing. White bass everywhere but there and then they are sand bass.

Around the Great Lakes, white bass are called silver bass.

How about the guys that call blue gills/sunfish...perch. A perch is a perch. There is a big difference between the two.

If you want to get all technical then we'd all be wrong calling a largemouth bass a bass since it isn't a true bass and a member of the sunfish family really. However, bass has been a label that has been stuck to it just like perch has been stuck to other sunfishes in the South. Just because it isn't right doesn't make it wrong. laugh

Well, a sandbass out here in North Texas is a white bass. But if you go out to California, a sandbass is a true seabass ....

Really, thats not quite right either. Yes, black basses (small mouth, LMB, spotted bass) are in the sunfish family but they are still called basses, not true basses but they are called black basses and Large mouth basses.

The family name that includes all black basses, large mouth basses, and sunfish is called Centrarchidae. The genus name which is Micropterus (black and large mouth basses) is a different genus name than Lepomis (common sunfish). So we are not wrong for calling them Large mouth basses or black bass or small mouth bass, you just cant call them a true bass. Technically they are a bass in the sunfish family but it is not scientifically wrong to rever to them as a bass.

haha, no. I dont want to be get too far into it but all basses, sunfish, perches and drum fish fall under the scientific Order name of Perciformes. LMB, common sunfish, pike, walleye and true basses all fall under this order classification of Perciformes. Then after the order classification you go down to the Family classification. Sunfish and Perch are two different Families of classification. The Centrarchidae (sunfish) family classifications contains all your sunfish breeds (bluegill, warmouth, etc.) and your crappie fish and your black bass fish (LMB, SMB, and spotted bass). The other Family group of the Order classification of Perciformes, is the Percidae (perches)family that doesnt contain what we here in the south refer to as a perch. The percidae family contians Walleye, yellow perch, etc. These are longer fish in shape like a walleye and are commonly found up in the northern states. They are not round looking like sunfish. Here is an example.
http://www.epa.gov/bioiweb1/html/fish_perches.html
Scroll down on this page and it will tell you which fish are in this perch family. And they are nothing of what people commonly refer to perch here.

I.Order-Perciformes

II.Family-centrarchidae (sunfish)-LMB, SMB,common sunfish

II.Family-percidae-(perches)-yellow perch, walleye, etc
