when you say you upgraded your lowrance, how do you do that? i have the HDS 8 i bought new in september, do i need do upgrade already?

This video shows you how to do it and what you will need. You probably don't "need" to do it but there will be some updates that would help your unit. You can check the Lowrance site to see what you need. Here are the instructions - How to Update Lowrance HDS Software
