Everyone,

I realize you probably have already heard everything about Prop 9, Texas beach access and all of us, but the message below is important, whether or not you sign the petition. This is another reminder:

Please vote for Prop 9 and protect our access to the Gulf through public beaches. All along the coast wealthy and influential developers are trying to exclude the people of Texas from using the beaches, either for fun or Gulf access. they want to build and have the beaches for the wealthy who buy their homes. Not fair to us by any means! Please vote!! Read on:

Quote:
I just signed a petition, pledging that I'm going to vote early or on Tuesday, Nov. 3 -- for Proposition 9, which would amend the Texas Constitution to protect our rights of access and use of Texas' public beaches. You can sign up, too!

Check out this page at the Environment Texas Web site:

http://www.environmenttexas.org/action/protect-beach-access?id4=tafsent

Thanks.

I got the message above earlier today. I think its just a pledge to vote for Prop. 9, but I signed it anyway. I will vote for Prop. 9.

The rich beach developers think they will wear us down! Got news for them.

Ray

I linked this thread to the OT section too. Beach access is VERY important to me. I grew up making sand castles right next to the family car as my father fished on Texas beaches and it pains me to see that they are being restricted now. It's only going to get worse.

I may be in the minority but I think beaches shouldn't be restricted from public use but should be restricted from driving. Go visit places where driving on the beach is limited. They are MUCH nicer and cleaner than Texas beaches. You can still access beaches but they aren't trashed by weekend crowds that leave all of their garbage on the beach. Also, have you ever tried to relax on the beach with EXTEME loud music blaring right next to you or some yahoo tearing [censored] through the sand on their truck. Sorry, but I think driving on beaches (not to beaches) should be limited and in most areas prohibited. That said, everyone has the right to Texas beaches and in no way should access be prohibited. The shoreline is state property, not landowners property.

PC, shutting down places like san luis to driving limits the access to fish it. u really gonna walk all that way? yes the noise gets annoying sometimes but anybody could easily bring a stereo out there and crank it up. now i do think things like dirt bikes and 4 wheels should be prohibited though. that carp irritates me to no end.

I think there should be exceptions and San Louis Pass could be one such area. That is why I say limited driving versus just prohibiting it altoghether. However, you can't tell me that our beaches wouldn't be in better shape if you didn't have people tossing all their trash, fishing line, etc. on the sand when they get ready to leave. I have seen people actually clean out their vehicle on the beach and leave the trash to blow away in the wind. That's crazy! I have never seen this on any other beaches that I have visited. If we are going to continue allowing people to drive on the beach, there should be a way to hold people accountable for the messes they leave behind.

BTW, there are plenty of places worldwide where you can't drive on the beach and people can fish just fine. Create a parking area where people can walk to fishing areas. People may get ticked off at first but it is really not that bad and you get used to it. People walk to the end of the jetties all the time. Why couldn't we designate public parking areas and have walking access to fishing/beach areas? At least, when people throw their trash on the ground, you only have to clean up a parking lot. That's better than having to clean up the entire beach if you ask me. I will step down off my soap box now! wink

I hear ya, but I wont enjoy carrying ice chests, tackle boxes, chairs, rods, beach umbrella and stuff for 1/4 or more miles down the beach instead of driving it.

Personally, I dont think they should allow the building of beach houses within 300+ yards of the high water line on public beaches...(even though I'll probably build or buy one after retirement.) I'd be just as happy seeing it from my balcony, without having to be right on top of it.

I think all coastal beaches should be deemed "National Seashore" and never have any houses on them. The beach was my "park" when I was a little kid and I want my great, great grandchildren to enjoy them just as I did....long after I'm dead and gone.

So it should be restricted to people of different hobbies? Maybe we fishermen disurb the motorsports crowd. If its open to one, it should be open to all

"What are those 25% folks thinking? "

They are thinking that they work for developers, or own a beach house, or have family members who own one, etc. Then again...some are just stupid and believe they are entitled to the entire beach simply because someone left them a little money in their will. Of course, some earned it, too. You can also blame some of it on the illegal immigration problem. People are tired of seeing families with 15 kids who run around bothering other families in public places.

Now, if we can just pass a law outlawing developers....

just restrict the areas to be developed. developers bring many jobs to the area they are building and some folks need them right now.
