HaRyan, the 5-6wt kind of rod is pretty well the norm around here for bass/panfish expeditions. If you want to wave around some of the bigger bugs, the 8wt is fine, but I actually fish with a rod made by TFO that's rated for between 300-400 grains. Actually if you're in the market for a heavier rod, there's a thread on here with a member trying to sell a Sage Smallmouth that would fit the bill almost perfectly for you.

Welcome HaRyan
... A foot in the Red River means you're under OK rules (it's a long story that includes the National Guard from Oklahoma blockading the bridges across the Red during a border dispute in the '30's)... The dispute is older than than that. Here is an article from Oklahoma Historical Society.

HaRyan, welcome to TX. Well, make that enjoy TX, I reckon we switched spots. I just moved out to Lancaster CA. Since you're an old creek fisherman, you'll have a blast on the little creeks out there. I caught quite a few channel cats on wooley buggers in the creeks around San Antonio.
FISH ON!!! ummmmm off

Here is the TX/OK Red River boubdary from the TPWD Outdoor Annual 2009-2010...a TX license allows you to get your feet wet below the dam to Shawnee Creek Denison Dam Waters

Please note from that map that the Texas boundary is very close to the shoreline. A lot of the sandbanks in the middle of the river are in OK water. Just be careful if you wade below the dam.
