Throw the Catfood away and get a bag of cattle cube. You'll be way ahead of the game.
+1 they work well, and only cost around 8 bucks for a 50 lb bag.

get a home depot bucket with lid put the cat food in it with a 10 lb. bag of birdseed. add a cup of sugar, a lb. of blood meal and enough water to fill bbout half way. seal up and put out in the sun for 3-4 weeks. open it up and if you want to vomit it's ready.

Grind it up and make chum balls out of it.
Works great and will sink.
