Since I'm fairly new to TFF, has anyone in the past posted for greenhorns how to use good depth finders to locate and recognize concentrations of fish on a sructure? - Including what scope patterns are good and which ones you should ignore or are misleading? Maybe someone knows of such a tutorial on another web site. I structure fish for whites pretty much exclusively and won't stop and wet a hook until I find a suitable concentration of fish. I've thought about doing a tutorial about this but not if it has already been done.

Sounds to me you do just fine. As for learning your sonar the best tutorial is hands on experience on the water. I'm the same way I don't stop unless there is plenty of fish on my sonar. Ofcourse my sonar picks up a bit more than the average sonar. I scan 200 ft at one time with my 1197.

Chuck, I think you misunderstood me. I'm thinking about creating a tutuorial to help newbies unless one has already been done.

I think John Varner has posted several pictures in the past as well as some of Moe's videos have shots of the screen but a refresher course wouldn't hurt anyone.
I know Ernest Paty has posted a lot of shots from his side scan.

It ain't easy making it look easy.

I personally would like to see a good tutorial. My current plan has been go with guides and watch what they watch for. But at the rate I can afford trips, it will take me forever to learn anything. Did learn a good pointer on my last trip. If screen fills up solid bottom to top.....fish.

I used the Tutorial that Tiny did on the Catfish section and used that to help me find the Sandbass.

It is different every day what you see and what the fish want.

Some days I just pass fish just to find more.

And some days (and its tough) you bet I turn on them.

It is different Everyday, I know it hard to read (it changes everyday) you just have to read what you see some days you have to fish the HARD to see fish and catch the tough fish. Of course other days I just past those up to catch the easy fish.

You just have to read those fish for that particular day and then just know how those fish are reacting slow or they are active and you respond accordingly.

Adjust to the fish that you have found (slow way down or if they are active you bet move that bait a little more), it is ever changing.

I have done 2 classes at Bass Pro that had 86 people the first time then 74 the second that lasted about 3 hours. It was a powerpoint presentation whith questions and answers. I no longer do things with Bass Pro so I have not done one in a while. We are talking about having another but need to figure out where to have it at grin I , along with many other guides offer learning trips and we mainly go over all details.
