I have been told that Redfish with more than one spot on them were farm raised, then released. Just want yalls opinion on this.

False. Been seeing them for nearly 50 years.

FALSE! I've never even heard that be rumored. Having multiple spots is not uncommon for this fish but having no spots is extremely rare. And here's another fun fact, redfish can live up to 60 years unless caught...

i have heard that when a fish is a hatchery fish it is more prone to having multiple spots. Like the reds here in the lakes alot of multiple spots...i've even caught some with zero spots.

Fish that are "farm raised" hatch from eggs of fish that are caught wild then brought to hatcheries such as the one in Flour Bluff just to name a few. Those fish are then put in tanks where they do not have to work so hard for food and are used for brood stock.
There is no correlation between a "farm raised" fish vs wild fish and the amount of spots that they have. Their spots are for defense against predators...that is all.
I've caught reds in the ULM that have had 0 spots and I've also caught reds that have had 100's of spots! Good analogy would be freckles and humans.....some of us have none, some have a few, and others have thousands!

Islander05, just out of curiosity, how are the spots on redfish used as a defense, or how do they use them as a defense should i say?

the spot on the tail is supposed to look like an eye, therefore predators attack the tail first avoiding the head area.

I've heard that the spot is for self defense but I also think I read an article before that said it wasn't scientifically proven, but don't quote me on that.
