I had a fiest back in the 80's.He was going to be a good one too,but he got run over.I'd like to hunt with you some time if you'll have me.I used to run an awesome pack of beagles too.But now I'm in the city limits with nowhere to hunt. Those were the days.

yea, the dog i hunt with is my girlfriends dad's dog, he is a pretty good dog, always seems to find the squirrels. he also has like 2 other dogs, he use to hunt one a lot, but she is getting old, and she seems to be pregnant constantly. they usually have some pretty nice pups they give away every year..they have sold some before, but he doesn't care to make money off of them so he usually gives them away. i too don't usually get a whole lot of time to hunt, that's why i tag along with them when they go, but ever time is always fun.

I'd imagine running dogs, you almost have to hunt with a shotgun. All of my squirrel hunting was either stalking or finding a good bunch of mast trees and sitting and waiting on them to come to me. Back in the day I used to love shooting them with .22 shorts 'cause they were so quiet. Nowadays they have air rifles that are louder than the .22 shorts we used to use. Even though I don't hunt anymore, I can still remember the feeling I used to get the day before opening season over in Louisiana. Good Lord willing, I'll get to do that agin one of these years. Thanks for the wonderful posts!

That was my method too back in the day,Tex.But after deer season and the leaves were all gone,we used our fiest and a shepherd mix to hunt squirrels.Like you...hopefully I'll get back to the tall timber in N. central La. and hunt again.I miss walking down the bayou killin squirrels until the beagles got close. Then I'd hunker down and look for the rabbit. Thanks for making this post,my man.It brought back some memories of "the good ole days."

when i first started huntin squirrels & rabbits it was done with a daisy .177 air rifle. it killed many squirrels & rabbit's. i grew older & started using .22's and shotgun's too. I think the shotgun is best b/c yur going to have to act quickly & accuratly sometimes if you want to bring some food back with you.

I shot my share of tame "Citified" squirrels as a kid with a Benjamin .177. Shot my share of "Country" squirrels in Tchefuncte River bottoms in southeast LA, and Tunica Hills up near St. Francisville/Angola, LA. Big difference between City and Country squirrels! I prolly scouted areas for squirrels much like deer hunters do for deer. Loved to get out in the woods in late summer and look for trees loaded up with mast. Beech and Hickory were my favorites. Find a nice spot with a tree I could sit with my back up against. Usually not too far from the trees I wanted to hunt. Show up there just before daybreak and wait for those little fellers to come running in. The only time them little country squirrels weren't going 90mph is when they stopped to eat. That's when I would pop 'em with my .22. The thing I figured out about .22 shorts, is you could have 8 squirrels in a tree, and the sharp crack of that .22 wouldn't scatter them. Usually they'd just freeze and try to figure out where that noise came from. After I dropped a squirrel, I would just sit still, 5 mins later the rest of them would go back to eating. God be with ya if they saw you though, that's when you'd wish you had a shotgun 'cause then it's just like wing shooting as they all scatter. If I had done my homework, and didn't get spotted, I usually made it out of the woods with my limit by 9 or 10am. Again mev002, thanks for the stroll down memory lane!
