Lake Bryan is nice, but I think they need to have someone on the water monitoring the recreational boaters. It doesn't seem like they do that out there, at least everytime I've been there.

Yesterday, we were over by the levy and had some problems with people skiing and getting too close to us, so we went to the other side of the lake. It was much nicer over there. Also, I've noticed people don't like to observe the no wake bouys in between the two parts of the lake by the bridge.

Monday and Tuesday evening was slow. The Game Warden has his hands full most of the time. I've see them out at the lake in a boat and on shore checking everything. The lakes main draw now is the recreational boaters they are creating the cash flow for the lake and t much of the time it is in direct opposition to the fishing and fisherman. There will always be the few who ruin it for everyone else. If you go early in the morning especially during the week there is seldom anyone else on the water that isn't fishing. I agree it is a nice and close place to fish.

Three trips out to the dock and not one crappie big enough to keep, but I did catch a lot of small crappie. The shad are spawning over in the swimming area and the bass should be in there after them in the AM hours

Went out to Lake Bryan 4/8 evening. Paddled all over the east part of the lake. Nothing along the banks in the reeds, nothing along the levee but one puny bass. It wasn't from lack of effort. I must be doing something wrong. Guess I should have made the drive to Somerville.

What's y'alls choice for bait/lures when crappie fishing this lake? Is there any nearby source for shiners?

Thanks,
JC

I've been using 1/8th oz jigs and minnows off the boat dock to catch crappie. I'll work a spinnerbait along the rocks just about anywhere and usually catch some nice bass. I fly fish the swimming area in the mornings now that the shad are spawning, the swimming area should be good until May.

Bill's baithouse on hwy 21 is the only place I know of to get bait when heading to Lake Bryan.

What side of 2818 is Bill's baithouse on?

Went sunday afternoon to dark. We found crappie where all the shad were in coves. We could see them. Problem was they wouldn't bite anything. Threw a whole plethora of baits at them. One big crappie was caught on a shad. Also caught a catfish and some small bass.

What you probably were seeing in the shallows were talipia. They do look like crappie but will stay in the shallow water all summer. The crappie will be hidden in slightly deeper water when they are spawning. The water clarity at lake Bryan doesn't allow for good viewing of spawning fish but the talipia will cruise right below the surface.

Ah yes they probably were talapia. So how would I go about catching one?

use a net.. there isn't much lure-wise that they will take except when protecting their nest. I think they are like carp and eat veggies mostly. Maybe some dough bait or whole kernal corn. I've caught some by accident with spinners and flys and have been known to snag one here and there..
