Hey Im new to saltwater fishing, and this weekend I plan on going to rollover pass to target some flounder. Can I use Glup shrimp to catch flounder and if so what kind of setup do I use with my rod?
Thanks
clueless.

AJ Perez, that is very cool. I definitely want to try the power locks. Have you tried them?

Hi Surferguy, yes the Power Locks work well and I really like them. I use them on most all my soft plastic baits for catching trout, redfish, and flounder. They work great, hold up in saltwater very well, and I like the sliding weight on them.

Yes GAdawg, just cut the tail off of the Gulp Shrimp like in the video and rig it like he did and it works very well with that setup. Use New Penny or Pearl White color in 3". And you should do very well with the flounder on them.

Now I feel like heading over to Rollover Pass !!

I didn't watch the video, but here's what I do:

I like to fish with soft plastics, red with a white tail. Sand eels are good, gulp shrimp, or bass assassians. 1/4 oz jig head, small rattle inserted near the tail (But not too far down, don't wanna change the action of the tail.) Bump it sloly along the bottom, when a flounder hits it, it will feel like you're hung up. Be sure and set the hook hard, their mouth is VERY boney.

Also, if you start catching them and when they get to the surface they spit the lure out, they'reshort striking. If that's the case, get a DOA shrimp and use that, or rig an extra small treble hook near the tail.

Hope this helps!

Also I read in another post, somewhere here on these forums that sea robin belly and flounder belly meat is the absolute best bait to use for catching flounder. To cut strips of the underside white meat part of the flounder when cleaning them and use them for bait and they make the absolute best flounder bait, better than mud minnows or finger mullet or live shrimp or plastics I guess. I'll see if I can find the post on it. Who'd a thought that the best bait to catch flounder is flounder itself !!

But yeah Nate, me too that's what I like to use, red and white (strawberry/white) color shad tails or shrimptail soft plastics for flounder. And I have some rigged with a small treble hook on the tail too that I make myself for short striking fish. And I spray them with WD-40. I don't know what it does or what is the purpose of it but I learned it many years ago, like 20 years ago, from this guy that did that and it has worked for me. I just spray a little WD-40 on the plastic bait before I cast it out and it works very well. Or maybe it's just in my head but I find it helps and any little bit helps when catching fish I guess.

The white belly as a teaser on the hook is true. Plus, it holds up better than a piece of shrimp... Just cut a peice about 1/2 the size of a stick of chewing gum.

@ AJ PEREZ,

I think you don't know the W-40 is made with ...fish oil,and for this reason work for fishing.

I always thought that fish oil being an ingredient in WD-40 was a myth or urban legend. But maybe it does have fish oil and they keep it a secret, I don't know. But I know it seems to work on soft plastic baits since I started using it about 20 years ago.

I know WD-40 was invented back in the 50s to primarily use it for cleaning and protecting electronic circuit boards. And then people found many uses for it. Including using it for lubrication purposes like bicycle chains and moving metal parts even though it's really not a lubricant and more of a cleaner and corrosion blocker/preventer.

But one thing is for sure if there are 2 main things I take fishing it's WD-40 for my soft plastic baits and super glue to repair any cuts.

Best two investions ever made in my opinion. WD-40 and Super Glue !!

Anyways I tend to ramble on, back to flounder rigging....

So basically tipping a plastic bait or jig with a small piece of flounder belly works really good right? I have never tried it and know a lot of guys tip it with shrimp but I can see the flounder belly working well since it would last longer and it supposedly has something in it that attracts flounder like crazy.

I have caught a lot of flounder with speck rigs too. White and hot pink colors. And sprayed with WD-40.

I think fisherman up in the New Jersey and Long Island area that fish in the Boston Harbor area which is supposed to be awesome flounder fishing use fresh clams for bait with a lot of success since it is the most popular flounder bait up there. I don't know if it would work for Texas flounder though and never tried using clams but would be neat to find out just to try something new that most people don't use.

Great video!! Who'da thought to take the tail off and rig it backwards. I gotta try that one! Oh, do you use a weight of somekind with it? Hard to cast on a windy day out here if not.

Yes, that technique of cutting off the tail and rigging it backwards works very well in all situations for redfish, flounder, trout or whatever species you are after. That's how I rig it if I fish a Gulp shrimp. And make sure the hook is super sharp too.

The Power Locks have an adjustable weight on the hook which is why I like them because you can adjust where the weight is on the hook for different presentations. There are many types of hooks made by Mustad, Owner, etc. and some you can get without a weight on the hook but many have weights on the hook already.
