Does anybody know if there is any good crappie or sand bass fishing to be done at Pat Mayes Lake in Paris?

And if so where would you fish?

Thanks,
DannyB

Danny,
There are a lot of good crappie and sandies in Pat Mayse. Are you local?

I live in Sulphur Springs. I need to get several things fixed on the car on warranty at the Toyota dealer one day soon. It will take several hours. I just can't stand sitting in a dealership that long.

I thought we would drop off the car and my wife, son and I would check out Pat Mayes just for something to do.

Hey greenhead, why do you say that about Pat Mayse? I've got some family that lives near there and I've been thinking about fishing that lake but I don't know much about the area.

I haven't ever targeted the crappie on this lake but I have caught quite a few good ones while bass fishing. However, Lake Pat Mayse is a very good lake for sandies (some magnum size ones too) and the hybrid striper fishing is very good also. Invariably, when we are bass fishing, we run across schools of hybrids. They really like windy main lake points. I see quite a few people trolling for them, but we haven't tried it. It's not a real big lake (only about 9,000 acres) so it shouldn't be too difficult to locate them on your electronics.

Thanks for the feedback. By the way are there any bridges to get into the shade and crappie fish under??

Thanks,
DannyB

I bumped this up hoping one of you Paris guys would see my question regarding whether there is a bridge anywhere. Once in a while I just have to get in the shade.

Looks like tomorrow or Thursday will be our day to go.

Thanks again,
DannyB

Let us know how you do. I've been wanting to try out Pat Mayse, Fannin, Crocket, and others up there. Supposed to be good.

We went today. In about two hours time exploring and figuring out where to fish we caught two nice fish. We lost two that bent the rod double. One stripped the drag for a while. My boy wrestled both for a while before they got off.

Here is the deal for me. I have never caught a striper until today---I think. I have reviewed the Tx Parks and Wildlife guide thoroughly and am pretty sure it is a striper. It was twenty inches and weighed probably five pounds. Several stripes went to the tail.

My seven year old son with a little help from my wife landed this fish. My son thinks he caught "Jaws".

I don't know how to post pictures on the site but will email a picture to anybody that may want to clear this up for us and post a picture of a proud seven year old boy with the biggest fish he has ever landed.

Thanks,
DannyB

As you probably figured out by now, there are no bridges on Pat Mayse to fish under or around. Regarding your big fish, it was more than likely a hybrid striper. I don't think there are any pure stripers in that lake but I could be wrong. One way to tell is by looking at the girth of the fish. Most stripers are long and lean (until they get real big) and hybrids are usually wider around the body/belly area.

20 inches and five lbs = hybrid. Those
skinny 20 inch stripers are just
babies.
Good luck

I have a relative that looked at the pictures and said that it definately wasn't a Striper. He wasn't positive however if it was a Sand Bass or Hybrid.

I know it had several stripes that made it to the tail. They just didn't looke broken and staggered like the Hybrid illustration in the Tx. Parks & Wildlife manual.

One thing is for sure. I won't dare tell my seven year old son any different. He is still high as a kite over this "striper".

How big do Sand Bass get? I am too used to the twelve inchers to call this a Sandy.

Thanks,
DannyB

Danny B,

Email that picture to me and I will post it in this forum for you would like.

mattntracy@charter.net

That does sound like a hybrid though, and I bet the ones that bent the pole over and got away were hybrids also, they put up a good fight and like to run.

Matt
