Hello Everyone, here’s the proposal for the casting games in McKinney, TX.
Date: Saturday, November 14 Place: Town Lake Park (it is right off of Hwy 75) near the volleyball court (across the street from the high school) Time: 9:00 am Equipment: What ever rod and line you want to use. Fly : Yarn
This is an invitation to join us for some fly casting games. The objective is to get together and practice or learn some casting skills that may not be used very often. This will be a very informal event and every one of all skill levels is welcome to attend, all you have to do is show up.
For this first event, I have listed 6 proposed casting stations most of which are from the “Danish casting games”. Each of these stations emphasizes a different casting skill.
I do not intend for this to be a formal casting clinic, but we could start the day by visiting each station and having a demo/explanation of the casting skill needed for that station. For example on station #1, we could talk about distance casting what needs to change in your casting stroke and timing as distance changes. We could also show a couple of practice drills that can be used help improve distance casting. For station #4, we could demonstrate how to make a Reach cast and when it would be used. My thought is that we’d spend about 15 minutes at each station. Then everyone can cast to each station however they want to. The more experienced casters can help the less experienced casters as needed and wanted. (If anyone is interested in doing the demo for any of the stations, please send me a PM.)
There is a scoring system that can be used if we want to do something like that or we could skip it and keep it very informal.
For Equipment, use whatever rod, line, leader, and reel that you want to use and you can change as often as you want to change. You will need a yarn fly to be able to tell if you hit the target and only yarn flies will be acceptable. (A yarn fly is just a piece of yarn tied to the end of your leader.)
Here are the proposed casting stations:
Station #1 – Moon Shoot Make your first cast to the ring. Walk to where the fly landed and make your second cast to the ring. (This is a distance casting skill.)
Station #2 – Limbo Cast to a ring that has an obstruction three feet above the ground and in front of it. (Did you ever try to cast to that fish hiding under the tree limb or undercut bank?)
Station #3 – Straight & Narrow Cast to the ring between the ropes. The line cannot touch the rope on either side. Cast to the ring again and the line must touch the rope on both sides. (Accuracy and aerial mends.)
Station #4 – Reach Cast Cast to a ring and reach to the right or left. (An alternative way to add a mend to your line.)
Station #5 – Roll Cast Roll cast to a ring. (The roll cast, a very useful cast.)
Station #6 – Canoe Cast Cast to targets from a sitting position in a chair while keeping both feet on the ground in front of the chair. One target will be slightly to the left side of the chair, one target will be slightly to the right side of the chair. (Casting to targets that are not directly in front of the caster.)
Anyone interested in participating?
Thanks, Rex
