I am planning on going this weekend and getting a 10 to 12 foot rod and need some suggestions. I am a fan of Ugly Sticks but have no experience with the 10 to 12 foot rods. As for pricing I do not want to spend a fortune but do not want a super cheap rod.
I am planning on using my Abu 6500c4, will this be an issue with the longer rods.
Thanks for the help.
Tim

I am a fan of DAIWA rods.....BEEFSTICK, SEALINE, TEAM DAIWA, EMBLEM, EMCAST, SALTIGA......All of these surf rods are made by daiwa and are great trophy catfish and striper rods...They range from 40 to 300 dollars.....Just got to BARLOWS TACKLE SHOP....They sell them all...As far as using a abu 6500 on a surf rod...you will need to spool up some braid!

...you will need to spool up some braid! On top of some mono. About half and half. I use both Ugly stiks and Jarvis Walker Tuff Tips. Uglys in 7 and 8ft MH. Tuff's in 7ftMH. Both are fairly cheap at Academy. If you want to spend more I've heard good things about these. http://www.proanglertackle.com/index.htmAnd the Team Catfish 1/2, 3/4, and 1 ton rods. http://teamcatfish.com/I know Olsens in Ft. Worth off of Jacksboro Hwy carries the Team Catfish rods. Good luck to ya.

with a 10 or 12 foot surf rod....you will throw every yard of mono off of that 6500....thats why I suggest braid or you can upgrade to a ABU GARCIA 7000 BIG GAME

I thought all braid would cause some problems. But I've never filled a spool up with it so don't really know.

I have all my reels completely spooled with 65 pound power pro and never have had a problem. I use a little trick though, I wrap electrical tape around the spool about 3 times before I spool it up. It keeps the braid from slipping.

If you're set on a 6500, get a Tsunami 10' rod...good backbone, lightweight, and thin. Won't be overkill with a 6500 on it.
No fish is too good for the grease.
