After 1 year of being on the truck, this wrap was just so faded, it was silly, and the adhesive was so baked on because they used the wrong laminate, that it took 4 days of elbow grease from 2 guys to get it clean, what a mess. I thought it was just about wrap season and it is a good idea to show you guys what can happen to a paint job when the wrong materials are used. This is the first of 2 videos, check out the other one which will pop up after the end of the first. It shows some of the stuff that gets done as well when you don't take the rear lights out of a pickup, very interesting stuff. This is not a plug, so please don't move this to the announcement section, I am simply trying to educate people on what can happen when the wrong material is used on their wrap. Its good information when these guys are getting new wraps on their trucks and boats this upcoming season. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQZRuH4rM88http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WM7BL96llE

So, youre saying that the use of duck tape for a wrap job is a non-starter?

You should make a video of the way a wrap should come off.Would like to see the difference myself.

That does look like an ugly removal job. Reminds me of how bad I hate peeling wall paper off a wall.

I've mentioned this before, don't skimp on price when shopping for a wrap. Most importantly ask for customers who have had a wrap taken off.
I had a boat here in the shop 6 months ago that was BUTCHERED! Who ever installed the wrap (it was NOT BSG!) cut the boat horribly. When they trimmed the wrap, they left razor blade marks on EVERY single seam, and cut into the clear gelcote of the boat. Most areas were so bad, they couldn't be sanded and buffed out.
The owner literally had a $10,000 claim against the company that installed the wrap. When he called them, they didn't have liability insurance. UGHH!

You Should always use a company with the proper insurance when leaving a boat in some cases cost over $60,000. Also make sure they have the insurance to cover the boat in case of theft or fire or other damage. Most shops dont have the proper insurance to cover a customers boat. Most will make the owner turn it in on his own insurance. If a shop takes your boat into his shop in good faith he will take care of it, the shop should also be responsible for what ever happends to it.

It all comes down to you get what you pay for... The average customer isn't going to know the difference between IJ180C and IJ180Cv3 8519 3m lam or DOL Lam. I don't care who's film you use it will leave some adhesive behind. I always invite my customers into the shop so they can see what we have to offer. They see how we manufacture our custom lighted signs all the way down to boat wraps. They can see the process first hand. I always let my customers know the areas where the adhesive will be left and it is a pain to clean. Those areas are where we have applied tape primer. Wraps will get a bad name just like neon has. Printers are getting cheaper and it's getting easier to print good color and there are a lot of poor wraps out there. Find a good wrap/sign company and stick with them. A good place to start is www.wsanetwork.org or call me and I will try to help find one in your area.

....and one more thing.
Ask the wrap company "Will you cut my Gel Coat when you trim the vinyl will you"...They should say "No".
They should tape the boat off before they cut. If they don't....good luck.
I promise you may have a light cutting hand but it is almost impossible to not cut the Gel Coat with the X-Acto knife blades.
