When it rains, it poors. Oil from lower unit #4064153 10/20/09 12:49 AM

I just got the water jacket leak fixed, with three broken bolts, only to find oil coming out of my lower unit.
It is a 1991 Johnson 115. I pulled prop hoping for fishing string behind it, and found nothing. It seems like the oil is coming out from inside the housing. The seal closest to the prop does not appear to be leaking.

What is my next place to check?

Might be unburnt fuel and oil. Coming from the center of the prop where the exhaust comes out? Smell it, if it smells like exhaust thats your answer.

Put the plug in.

Creed - the best thing to do is drop the LU and have it pressure tested. Hopefully, the case is not cracked and it is just a seal. It could also just be oil leaking down from the power head through the exhaust tower. Are you sure it is LU oil?

I am sure it is lower unit oil. The oil is black.

Now I thing about it, I changed the oil a couple of months ago. Maybe the oil screws are not sealing correctly, causing water to enter making the oil displace? I will change the oil this week, again. I will look for water and replace the seals on the screws.

so is gas mixed with carbon deposits from the exhaust housing which tend to make its way out the gearcase exhaust,is the lower unit oil milky looking, if oil makes it way out water has to make its way in, do as rb says test it before you start taking things apart

Loosen the bottom drain plug on the lower and see what oil looks like. Should`nt be black in 2 months. I would bet on the leak being unburnt fuel-oil.

Ok. I will take a look to see if I have water in the lower unit. I will report back.

From what I can tell. I do not have water in the lower unit. The oil seems the same color as it went in.

Thanks for all of your help.

Chris
