I use a fly rod with alight spin reel for crappie. Works great in the boat and even better in a tube. Shoots great too.

Ditto on the fly rod spinning combo. I use the same and LOVE it. It's also cheaply done buying an inexpensive fly combo from Wall Mart then adding your favorite spinning reel too it. Try it.

I assume you just hold the rod above the reel, just like a fly reel?
That would seem akward to me...but the sensitivity of the fly rod would sure help with the crappie...

Just as cheap and effective as the fly rod is the telescopic crappie rods from BPS that have line guides and reel seats.
10' for 14.95 - 16' for 19.95.
That is what I use and I still have a handle that is capable of being placed in a rod holder.
I like them better than the B n M graphite rods. They are more durable and easier to store.

I USED THE TELESCOPING FIBERGLAS RODS FOR YEARS UNTIL I COULD AFFORD GRAPHITE. THEY WORK FINE, BUT GRAPHITE IS HALF THE WEIGHT, TWICE AS SENSITIVE AND ONLY TWICE AS EXPENSIVE. I SOLD MY LAST 4 FIBERGLAS ONES AT A GARAGE SALE FOR $2.00 EA. ------------------ GOOD FISHING. ERNEST 972-245-9311 www.catchcrappie.com I LIVE FOR THE THUMP"

I took Ernest's advice on the video and bought a 10' graphite jigging pole. Then I cut it down to a little over 9' and put on a new tip. Good strength and not too much whip on the end.

I started this with the intention of a cheap way to catch crappie. An old 8 or 9 ft. Fly rod that never was used or a cheap one at a garage sale? A small spin reel and yes mounted on the bottom. I started using one in a tube years ago. It really worked well. No tellies, not the same action. The guides are rough on the line, so you change line often. I used to flip/shoot to stumps. caught alot of bass, crappie ect. Many on 2lb line.

I suppose that is why they make so many types of rods. I have had very poor luck with the graphite rods. I have bought 3 and have bought 2 replacement end sections and still only have one left. 4 broken tips is enough for me to say there has got to be a better way. I found it, and the "Deluxe" telescopic rods are the way to go for me. Different strokes for different folks. I spider rig with mine so maybe they get more abuse than most put on theirs. I caught my largest fish last year on a 10' telescoping Uncle Bucks crappie rod, 13.5 pound Hybrid and several 11's and many 5-8's. They are tough. I use the 10 footers and the 13 footers. They also have ceramic guides so I don't think they are any rougher on line than any other rod. http://www.basspro-shops.com/servlet/cat...arTarget=browse

I AGREE WITH BOZO. IF I WERE SPIDER RIGGING I WOULDN'T MIND THE FIBERGLAS RODS. SINCE YOU DON'T HOLD THEM THE WEIGHT AND SENSITIVITY IS NOT AN ISSUE. IT'S TRUE THAT THE FIBERGLAS RODS ARE TOUGHER. SINCE I DON'T TROLL MUCH I PREFER THE LIGHTER MORE SENSITIVE RODS. ------------------ GOOD FISHING. ERNEST 972-245-9311 www.catchcrappie.com I LIVE FOR THE THUMP"
