I bit the bullet and got a HDS-7. The screen size compared to an HDS-8 is not that much different and for $700 difference in the price I went cheaper so my plan is to put it on the front once I save up enough to get the HDS-10.

I almost got the 997 but theres just something about the humminbird that I don't like (personal preference I guess).

Gonna install it tomorrow and have it ready for saturday morning.

Hopefully the structure scan will show up soon.

The GPS fix (4 times faster) is in on Humminbird and their sonar upgrade is awesome too. When you fish with me next I will show it to you. Also in January Humminbird is putting out the software update for their down imaging and it is free upgrade for all SI users.

My association with depth finders began with Humminbird, then I bought a boat that was equiped with Lowrance and have used Lowrance since. The more positive feedback/stories I hear about Humminbird I am beginning to lean toward a Humminbird SI. Jury is still out though.

I got a 798 and had left imaging issues just not gps issues however that was hoe the transducer was mounted. Since I had to relocate it I removed it all took it back and installed the 997 with the transducer placed center as possible. It imaged great i have several images posted on photobucket there a thread here with the link. However I was also leaning towards a HDS unit I am sure you wont go wrong I just heard horror stories from thier support. Have not used them my self so I will not judge them on that. I have used HumminBirds and their support was awesome so that kind if won me over.

so you like the gps as well now that it is faster? is the 997 screen going to be big enough to do side, down and map all at the same time? did they change the software to be able to use the whole screen now or is the left side still have all the data only?

I have the 788 ci Hummingbird with a NAV chip, just got it two months ago. The sweetest locator/finder/gps I have ever had. I had a Lowrance X91 and a Garmin GPS before that.

lol, my wife doesnt even fish. This is for me, just have to talk her into letting me spend the money. And since I've been bringing home fish lately she is questioning why I even need it now.

invest in the HD you will be happy you did. I am looking at the HD 10 but waiting on their version of the side imaging. I watched Jared Edwards Outdoors and they had a segment on the HDS series and all the funtions and was unreal how and what it is able to do.

I have several friends who run Hummingbirds and all run Lowrance to read directly under them.

I have not had good luck with HB finders.

I might even grab one of those St. Croix rods while I'm there, surely she won't notice the extra $100 on the bill.

Stretch, nothing in the crappie fishing world is worth making payments on except maybe a boat. I have a loan out on my boat but everything else is paid in cash. I would like to suggest that you save your money and pay for the HD8 the day you buy it. Hope Lowrance comes through on their promise of the upgrade for structure scan. Might be awhile.

Keep on fishing.

You may likely get the same issues with the Lowrance left side if you mount the transducer in the same location. Be prepared to experiment a bit with transducer location.

Wow that is great news on the GPS response speed! I just went to the yahoo users group site and read the news. It will be in the January upgrade that includes down imaging among other things.

Might just have to add the super enhanced GPS puck about the same time as well.
