I'm no expert on this, but I notice a distinct difference in the action of the baits. As was stated before, the Pop-R is more like a chugger. It causes a surface commotion, but almost too much sometimes. The Yellow Magic spits and just seems to attract more attention (bites) with this action. A good bait that is halfway in between in price of these two is the Excalibur Zell Pop. I watched a Jimmy Houston show one time and the guy in the back was throwing a Pop-R and Jimmy was throwing a Zell Pop and getting bites 3 or 4 to 1. Take this for what it's worth because I have caught fish on all three.

The feather on the ym has A LOT to do with it as well. Sounds a bit crazy I know but I have replaced several with off brand feathered hook and the baits were not nearly as productive as before. On another note, LC has a new popper coming out soon called the t splash. Supposidly it has feathered hooks on the front and back. Should be interesting to see.

I have quite a few YM's and they have a distinctly different action in my opinion than the traditional Pop-R's. I've got Pop-R's and YM's, and the magics have consistently shown better than the Pop-R's for me. But in the same light, a buddy of mine was doing better on a Pop-R than I was on my magic. Go figure smile

I like the YM's and they have a different pop to them.

If you can find these they are real good. They walk and pop pretty good too.

I have made my return on investment many times over, so I could care less how much it costs. Completely different action and profile. One of the few high dollar lures I can assure you will get what you pay for. But like someone said earlier, just keep on throwin that pop'r if you dont want to spend $15 on it

Every topwater popper model is going to have a different action, just like crankbaits, etc. I've never bought a YM just because of the price. I fish a Pop-R, the H2O popper, and the Rapala Skitter Pop. Some days one will do much better than the others. I can see the YM has it's place but it's one more choice among others. A case in point is a seriouly cheapo BPS Tourney Special popper a friend of mine put me on to. $1.99 in the bargain bait bin. It's a totally different shape and sound than the YM, Pop-R's etc. Average size size fish is much better too. Price is not the determining factor in the ability of a bait to catch fish. Yes, I'll probably buy a YM at some point, but it will only be to give the fish a different look.

To many lures are being over priced. Are you telling me it cost that company that much more to manufacture this bait than other baits that look the same. Maybe if it was as big as my leg i could understand material costs. Or if it left a poo trail of gold as you pop it through the water. Then and only then would i understand this.

The Rico by Lobina lures is more than the YM, and I still bought it.

My time on the water is to catch as many fish as possible or catch big fish and I like to use equipment that is best for that purpose. If a bait is PROVEN to catch more or bigger fish, I will have some. It doesn't make sense to me to go out there and burn all that fuel and fish with an inferior bait, just to save a couple of bucks on a lure.

Couldnt agree more, spend all the time and effort to get on the water and not give yourself the best chance to be succesful?
