Does anyone have any experience with Garmin handheld GPS units?

I've got a GPSMAP 76. Had it about 2 years. I love it.

I also have the gpsmap76. I bought a set of 12 cd roms that have every usgs topo quad for the whole state. I just make my routes on my pc and and can download straight to the gps or upload back to the pc. I used it to navigate through the yukon, the gulf coast and lots of places in between. It's become my best tool outdoors. The customer support at Garmin is great as well. The 76 is waterproof, and floats. It's one of the few things that I own that I can say is truly top of the line.

I just recently bought the Etrek Legend and would highly recommend it. Very user friendly and lots of features. With the free Mapsource software, I would go for it.

got a GPSMAP 76 and mounted it on the console of the boat and like it. the only thing i don't like about it is when in rough water it shuts off due to the banging of rough water.

I have the Garmin 110 and 120 GPS/Radio combo...very handio, works great. Very handy at a new lake trying to find your way back to the marina after a long day looking for fish.

Try out the new GPS Map 60C it's color and now my favorite! I had a 76 forever but the new one is by far and away the best handheld unit I've ever had my hands on! Easy to use, has lots of options and detail that is out of this world. Also with color screen which is a bit more expensive but you get greater detail and it's easier to view. I've got the etrex legend and while it is one of my favorite toys, I've had some trouble with it. The rubber seam that goes around the unit is coming off because the glue has lost its stick. I think using it on the coast might have had something to do with that. Also the screen sometimes fades in and out like it has a short. A good rap always brings it back though. All of this started about the time the one year warranty expired.

My other complaint is that the screen is so small it is really hard to read for these tired ol' eyes. Seems like they could improve on this as well.

Oh yeah, if you get this unit, get the power cord too. It is a battery hog!

I use it all the time for many different purposes. Except for the problems noted above, which could be an isolated thing, this unit still seems like one of the better values for the money.

I just got the 76C - great unit. It holds 115 mg of maps so you don't have to constantly load and unload maps depending on how many lakes or areas that you are using it for. I like the portability of it. The computer software is great also, easy to navigate.

If people focused on important issues, there would be a shortage of fishing poles.
