I have a 2007 PT cruiser. The A/C cuts out when I sit at a light for over 30 seconds. I can feel the vents quit blowing cold air, then the compresser kicks in for only a second or two. It does this about every 15 seconds or so. When the compressor kicks in, the motor acts like it wants to stall. But when I start moving, the AC works fine. No problems while I am driving, Or If I only sit at a light for a less than 30 seconds or so.
Do I have a small leak and the compressor has a hard time keeping up at idle?
Thanks for the help, Chris

Your radiator fan is not working and no air is moving over the condenser. The pressures get too high and the compressor cuts off. The connector under the car by the tranny usually burns. You can cut and solder or butt connector the wires. I don't think they sell the right connector without buying a harness. Call me if you need help. 817.996.3079

Thank you Dr Juice. I will check it out tomorrow after work. Sounds like this is a common problem.
PT Cruiser, the worst car in the world? If not, it cant be far behind.
Thanks again, Chris

The chryslers/dodges have problems with the cooling fan relay going out, might want to have that checked too.

Yep, just had to put a new fan in the daughter's mustang. The easiest way to eliminate the fan is pull the plug and with the car and a/c on check with a meter or test light if none back track to the relay.

I looked at it a little tonight. I only have one fan. But the fan is not turning on when the car gets warm. So the problem is the fan. I check the fuses, and all looked OK. The motor compartment is tiny, so the repair project will have to wait until this week-end.
Thanks again for your help, I will report back with what it took to repair it.

How do you check to cooling fan relay? I am guessing the relay is the multi plug boxes in the fuse box?

The fan connector is accessible under the car. If you don't have a DVOM, Test light or Power probe you will not be able to diagnose the problem without throwing parts at it. The circuit needs to be tested with the fan connected. Most of the relays can be tested and taken apart to verify complaint but you need a DVOM. Don

How do you check to cooling fan relay? I am guessing the relay is the multi plug boxes in the fuse box? I can't access alldata(sites down)at the moment but I believe it's on the drivers side fender well below the air filter housing.

I looked at the wires and the connector. All looked fine. I may have jared something back together, because the fan will turn on only when the car gets warm. Stays on for a couple of seconds then turns off. But the fan does not come on when the A/C is on.
A couple of days ago, the fan would not come on at all. I also switched one of the fan relays wth a like relay. Not sure if this did the trick. But the problem is still not fixed.

I work for a chrysler dealer. The fan is toast. Dont go with an aftermarket fan. I've replaced several this summer that the cusomer replaced themselfs and they didnt last 6 months.

actually the fan will come on immediately on A/C request, regardless of engine temp, which should be turning the fan on low speed around 205 deg. and high around 220 deg. Chrysler fans suck, perhaps a bad pun, but the truth regardless. the same fan works off 2 seperate relay outputs. both of which can be tested w/ a test-lite on the ground side of the fan connector while in operation. If this passes the test, I would look for debris buildup between the condenser & radiator. this is an often overlooked problem. Good luck & tight lines -Brian
