Going to Austin the week of Nov. 8. Any place to go catch some crappie in Austin. Not very familiar with the city, but have to spend a week there for educational training. My evenings are free and would like to do some jigging from the bank area.

Tough question...However the only suggestion I can give you is the following:

Town Lake: Mainly Largemouth Bass from the bank.

Lake Travis: Indoor Fishing Dock at Dutchmans Landing-Jonestown, Texas or any of the LCRA or Travis County parks you can catch bass, catfish, and maybe a crappie or two.

Cedar Park Community Lake: Off Parmer Lane and Brushy Creek Road, in far NW Austin, has bank fishing for Catfish, Bass and Crappie. Free Park!

Maybe others...

Could post the same question on

Good Luck in Austin!

The only place I've ever heard of decent crappie fishing near Austin is Granger Lake. Never tried it, though.

Redbud Isles, below the Tom Miller Dam, in town Lake. good crappie and pretty much everything else there.

Also the LCRA hot water discharge on the lower end of town lake, just above Longhorn dam, is good for both crappie and white bass this time of yr.

Both convenient, In Town spots, easy access.

You might try Decker Lake, just east of Austin, going towards Elgin. Another LCRA power plant lake, and it has some pretty decent crappie in it.

Granger Lake, on the San Gabriel river, North and East of Austin, just east of the town of Taylor. Great crappie lake, well documented on this forum.

I am sure there are others, but those come quickly to mind.

Do a search for granger on this forum and also for posts by crappie1. I believe he guides there. If you email him, he will give you some tips. And he wasn't too expensive if I recall. You might want to book him for a half day and have him show you some bank fishing spots.

Granger is a very good crappie lake. As a bank fisherman, you might try the mouths of the creeks right now. 2' of water.

Did a search on distance to Granger lake and its about 45 miles. Apparently the lake is known for crappie and some big catfish. Gonna have to give it try. Thanks everyone for the info. Steve-0, I looked up crappie1 and dropped him a email, thanks.

There are 4 Corps parks at Granger, and you can get down to the water to fish in all of them. At Fox park (near the damn) there is a fishing dock which can be good for crappie. Also, below the camping area is a spot where the river channel cuts close in to the bank. There are a number of brush piles within 20-30' of the bank there - and with the steep drop off, there always seems to be drappie somewhere around there.

At Taylor park there are 2 sloughs on either side of the boat ramp which are really good in the psring during the spawn. At Willits creek park you can get down to the creek - which is awesome during the spawn.

Another spot you can try is the settling pond below the damn after they do a release.
