Went fishing with my B-I-L's cousins in Rochester, NY last week. Caught this big girl as she was moving up the river from Lake Ontario to spawn. They guessed her at 40lbs. We caught several this size and a dozen or so a little smaller. Lot of fun on a 7' ML action spiining rod.

I had to back into shallow water to land her. She was running in about 3 feet of water where I caught her. And yeah, she was shooting eggs pretty good.
Didn't keep any. I don't care for Salmon that much. Probably cheaper to buy it at the store than to ship home anyway.

The boys I was fishing with were using fly rods. Looked like a lot of fun, but I didn't want to be learning with that kind of fish and a $400 rod. Maybe I can learn before next year.

It was a lot like sight fishing for bass in the spring. Watch for one to run up the river and try to put a fly in front of them. Or find one that is just sitting and drift one in front of her. I had to cast to that one about 25 times before she hit my fly.

nice fish, but no way is it 40#. I'd be surprised if it was 20.

Really.
She felt every bit as heavy as the bags of corn I have been dumping in my deer feeders.

NAh, She's full of Roe, she's 35 easily. I've caught plenty of salmon, they're heavy anyways, let alone full of eggs.

Nice fish and thanks for sharing.

Holy damnit, that's a fat girl. ~My Dad, 2009.
