Recently aquired a boat and want to do some crappie and bass fishing. My question here concerns crappie of course. I know about 1097 pilings but do have a question. Do you fish over the main river channell or will any of the pilings get her done? Also, where else should I try? Is there any deep standing timber and would that be good? When will they move to creek arms or will they in Conroe. I know the creeks are not like typical feeder creeks because of the dredging right? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

The fish I have been catching lately have been in about 30-33 feet of water. There are a few places on the lake that have deep structure like you are asking about but, they are in the main lake mostly and are hard to fish unless we luck upon good weather like we had last weekend. The 1097 bridge is your best bet until you get them patterned fairly well and then ventrue out to find places that match the the same scenario. This time of year they aren't necessarily on a brush pile but could be on channel edges, humps, stumps or channel bottoms. Minnows have been the best ticket lately. I have caught a few on jigs but not nearly as many as on minnows.

Alot of really good fish were caught this last weekend. I think most of the fish in the main lake have finally made it to deep water (27+ feet).

Hey guys,
I've been reading your postings for a while, but until now I've been too lazy to register so I could post.
I live on Lake Conroe and I to have been trying to unlock the mystery of catching fish on this lake.
I had a good day Saturday as well under the 1097 bridge. Sometimes I feel like a troll, but it's the most reliable place to catch fish on this lake. We kept 10 crappie, 4 cats and two hybrids after only a few hours of fishing. One of the crappie was 15 1/2 inches long and thick too. We tried Sunday, but it was colder and the north wind was blowing some and did not do very well.
I have a question about the 1097 "pilings". What exactly are you calling pilings? Are you just referring to the bridge support columns? There is one spot I have found on my depthfinder where it is only 20 feet deep and all around it is the usual 35 ft deep. It can't just be brush because the depthfinder sees it as a hard bottom. My theory is they left a pile of concrete debris from making the bridge. What do you think?

You are probably correct in that it is some sort of trashpile of construction rubble or maybe a left over mound of dirt or whatever.
As far as the pilings, yes I am speaking of the bridge support columns.
Did you catch your fish around that structure you have found in the 35 feet of water? Sounds like a good place to try.

Saturday we caught them by going from piling to piling with the trolling motor. They seemed to be suspended at about 20 - 25 feet. I wasn't able to fish the "trash pile" because someone was tied up near it. Sunday I did catch one from the trash pile and I have caught fish there in the past.
Anyone hear if the fish are biting up in the stubblefield area?

The fish are so stacked in the deep water right now, it would be tough for me to justify going up there.

Gitbow,
I agree. Why go up there when they are biting pretty well in the main lake. I was just curious if anyone had been up there yet. I guess it's probably a little early in the year anyway.
I just saw the weather...Friday the high is supposed to be 78. Saturday it's still supposed to warm up to 70. I'm not sure if the cold front is supposed to hit late Saturday or Sunday, but I plan to get out there before it hits. I'll let you know how I do.

I fished Conroe almost every weekend and holliday for 15 years in the 80/90s and then got moved to Louisiana where I switched to saltwater fishing. Now I'm back and buying a freshwater boat(hope it's ready today) and going back to Conroe. What I want to know is...what Dredging? Where and why? Wasn't putting those damn grass carp enough damage to that fantastic lake?

I am not aware of any dredging with the exception of some minor things done to create boat slips or small channels to new neighborhoods or marinas.

All but a very few of those grass carp are DEAD, DEAD, DEAD. And the grass is on its way back. And the fishing has gotten remarkably better the last couple of years. It should get even better over time.
Now if we can get them to stop putting those dadgum hybrid in there.

Is the grass "hydrilla" or something other? Did they ever prove that the grass carp were or were not reproducing?
I will never forgive Texas A&M for putting those carp in Conroe!!!

I fished the 1097 bridge this afternoon 3:00 pm to 5:00 with minnows, but only caught a few catfish. Where did the crappie go? As warm as it was, I thought it would be great. Any ideas on where they might have moved to? These overgrown perch are tough to find sometimes.

Jay,
That is a good question. I thought that this pre-front condition would turn them on big time but, it seemed as if it shut them down instead.
We got to the lake and fished from 7 till 4:30 with an hour break for a burger at lunch.
3 of us in my boat scratched out 18 keeper crappie today and 2 sand bass. We caught just a couple of more that were throwback size. It was hard and took all day to get them but, we had fun anyway.
