Best advise I can give you is hire a guide in the area and catch some fish. If you want to travel to the Austin area I'll take you on a trip for free @ Granger. flag

Hi there Ohio,

I am no expert, I just bought some land on Sam Rayburn and fly to Houston when I go out. Two hours away is Conroe and Livingston for sure no problem. I know a guy that lives near Conroe (Montgomery), he says that lake has a lot of boat traffic, as it is most close to Houston. I have driven over Livingston, and it is a fishy looking lake. I have not fished either, and my buddy is a Bass fisherman, so don't know. I have fished Big Sam, and the crappie fishing is pretty good. But it is more like 3 hrs from Houston Hobby airport. I need to get the name of the guide (can't remember) I used the last time out, he is very good. He launches out of Jackson Hill marina and has a 21' white center console Ranger, the marina owners for sure know who he is, he lives up around that cove there. He is an older gentleman, and a bunch of fun. He has more brush piles than Carter has little pills.

Let me know if you have no luck finding him. I tell you what I met a guy up there the first time out and he fishes the bridge (north end) pretty much all of the time for crappie. Which bridge (geeez?? the one that connects Zavalla and Broaddus). I hope that helps, when I live there (retired) you can come out and fish with me - anytime.

Good luck!

We (Crappie Anglers of Texas) had our 1st tourny on Livingston this year and it's a good lake for crappie and gators.

There are several guides on Conroe that can probably help you out. Call either Stow-a-way on the north end or April Plaza on the south end. There are also several guys on TFF that fish Conroe regularly for hybrids and crappie who might be coerced into fishing with you! smile
