What suggestions do any of you have in terms of tackle for bull reds? What type of rod and reel? What type of line? Mono? Braided? What lbs. test of line?
I have hooked a few in the past but never land any of them. Always seems to get broken off in the rocks. I need a rig that I can turn them with but before I spend the money I wanted to know what other have been successful with.
Thanks

7 1/2' Ug;y Stick MH action mounted with an Abu 6500C3 spooled with 65# Power Pro Braid and a 30# Mono Leader and you should be able to land just about anything that will eat your bait.

How long do you like to make your mono leader? Any special knot to tie mono to braided?

Thanks Trying to turn them is not going to happen unless you go with really heavy tackle, You have to let them run , only take line back when they allow it. If I were targeting bulls, I would have to go with an Abu 7000 or Calcutta 700. If you can spare the $$, the Calcutta is a pleasure to use. Good luck MO

How long do you like to make your mono leader? Any special knot to tie mono to braided? Leader = 20-24" long Knot = Uni to Uni for braid/Mono & Palomar Knots everywhere else. Also If you are Carolina Rigging your bait don't forget to put a bead between the Egg Wieght and the Uni-Uni Knot so it does not cut/fray your line. As MO said also it's best to have a full spool with plenty of line and don't try to horse them. Heck the whole reason for chasing them big bulls is the fight so why not enjoy it? Good quality Braid like Power Pro and plenty of it and have fun. You can fit (if memory serves me correctly) 250 yards of 65# Power Pro on a 6500 Abu and that will be plenty to have one heck of a time. Good Luck & TIGHT LINES!!! Rob

I'd stay away from mono leaders and rocks. Steal leader is better, and with a swivel it will reduce line twists and let your bait move freely. If you are gonna use a mono leader, put a swivel between the braid and the mono. A SPRO 80lb swivel is plenty small and plenty strong. Attach main line and leader to swivel.
I usually use a MH 7ft with a Abu 6500 with 20lb. I have a heavier set up with 30lb with a 8ft Hvy rod and a larger reel. I've been able to land pleny of those big boys. I always use steel leader a bull red may be what you are after, but that may not be what bites the hook. Everything in the saltwater has teeth and will usaualy cut line.
If I fished for money.........I'd be broke.
In a world of compromise.....Some don't.

I sell surf/redfish leaders. Caught plenty of sharks and reds on these. However it was pointed out about the toothy ones and mono. I've caught sharks on straight mono but were going for reds. U never know what u will catch...better to be safe than sorry. Here ya go... leaders

I just buy those steel Carolina rigs already made up and tie it to 20-40 Lb mono with a palomar knot. Same goes for a dropper rig. I use a single 12 inch plastic coated steel model...and put the #12 circle hook on the bottom snap. Slap a 2X2 inch piece of cut mullet or a whole small mullet on it and you're good to go for bulls.
Now, Donald...please pick John Bolton for your running mate.

BUY BIGGER ONES and clamp them with pliers after setting them.
( dont horse your red, either...let him run...that's what he's born to do anyway....enjoy it)

That is about identical to my rig. I use a 7' All Star Flipping Stick. I also tie the hook directly to the braid. I have caught reds on this up to 37 pounds. Black drum up to 56. Loads of fun.
