Could you guys tell me a little more about jig and bobber fishing. I've been trying it with absolutely no luck, while watching people catching fish on minnows in the same areas. Whats the deal? I've tryed mostly assassins under a float and popped it a little lighter than one would a poppin cork. I would love to know what kind of jigs and action ya'll use while fishing this way.

I use the smallest tube jigs I can find, usually 1/16 ounce. Have been catching them with regularity that way lately. You just need to find the color and depth they want. It pretty much works with any very small jig.

Yeah, but what kind of action do you send to the float

we caught some in a pond today with the jig and bobber rig. first time i've ever tried it. worked like a champ. were using regular chart. marabou jigs and also some white road runners. the way we caught them was to not even move the bobber hardly at all. an occasional twitch every now and then, the wind seemed to give it enough action.

my understanding is to use one jig not move it to much just a twitch here and there. find the color they like.

No action is the way to go most of the time. Biggest mistake most new jig fishermen make is trying to do something to make the fish hit. Just let is set there. Yesterday we loaded the boat and had to let the jig set for several min. before they would take it.

I use the smallest that I can get away with.

Don't use the weighted kind. I use the Wing It skinny ones that the line goes thru and you tie the thread knot in the line where you want it to stop instead of one that clamps on to the line.

Slip corks with a knot you can slide up and down your line to change the depth is the only kind we use whether we are crappie fishing with minnows or catfishing with stink bait. Much easier to cast than a bobber because the knot will slide through the eyes of your rod and you don't have to try to cast with five of six feet of line and cork hanging down (which always get hung in a briar or a branch if you are fishing from the bank ;o)).

I am going to try the jig under a cork. I have seen others fish with them very effectively in the past.

Ditto on smallest bobber, I use the old original cork with a bobber stop rig. Hard to find true "corks" anymore. All works well with a 12' telescoping pole.

? what is the best size line for crappie fishing

8 lb. line is the best for year round fishing. You can go lighter in the winter months, it sometimes helps. But when you get hung and and try to pull it loose with less than 8lb. your line usually breaks before the hook straightens out.
