I have a 2000 model 40hp johnson with a single cylinder lift that is leaking around the top o-ring. Any suggestions on the best way to repair it? Also is there any books similar to Chilton books for boat motors?

Remove the cylinder, remove cap, replace "O" ring and wiper. Only thing to watch is when removing the piston from the shaft. Some have spring loaded check valves and a small "O" ring seal behind the nut. Seal kits are available.

I buy mine at a hydraulic supply,take your cap and piston and they will match it up whole lot cheeper and a lot better seals. also get my sea star steering seals.

the book you want is the clymer for johnson/evinrude it will show you how to do alot of your own stuff.
