Sounds kinda weird don't it. Well that's what I was thinking whenever I was flipping thru the "B" side channels last night and came across an informercial for "The Zip Lure".

That was their catch phrase all thru this infomercial. "SLAY THE SLOBS!!!", "Ohh what a SLOB!!!!", "Look at that SLOB!!!".

They would even throw the words up on the screen. Now I am not knocking the lure one bit. It looked like it was catching from sturgeon to trout and everything in-between. I just don't get where this guy got his catch phrase from. He would yell it at the top of his lungs. Between him yelling and me laughing at him I dang near woke my wife up......mind you it was an infomercial so it was around 1:30a.m.

Anyways my question is this. Shouldn't he have been saying, "Slabs" not "Slobs". If I should be calling big crappie "SLobs" not "Slabs" please let me know. I just don't feel right by first off catching a fish then ridiculing it's appearance as being a "Slob".

Thanks,
Shifty

He wasn't speaking with an English accent now was he? Fishing must really be slow.

Just one more cast!

No he didn't have a english accent.......he did sound like he was on "In Fisherman" if ya know what I mean. They were also saying he was the host of some fishing show I have never heard of before. Probably some "B" side cable fishing show up north I guess. Just thought it was funny.

I have seen those infomercials as well. The lure looks like it would be effective and is similar in look to a gay blade lure, which I have had much success with for stripes and sandies on Whitney and Tawakoni. The "slob" appears to be a "yankee" or European term for fish and/or fishermen. I have heard this expression from people up north, "fishing for slobs" when referring to someone fishing for brown trout in coastal waters, seas or non-river/stream type bodies of water. I have also heard it in reference to fishermen who fish for trout or other species with live bait, illegal or very unorthodox methods...

I would think it is a marketing ploy...it sticks in your mind the next time you are out fishing...look at that "slob-asaurus". One of my fishing buddies and I were making fun of that this weekend. But you know what? He actually remembered the name of the lure, as you did Shifty. Looks like the marketing tactic is working

I finally saw the advertisment on tv for this lure. I have had people ask me for this lure at BPS but, had no idea what a zip lure was Once again this shows you how effective TV is. And, no BPS does not have this lure.

These lures a made great you know like the the worm that roles back up after you throw it in and the jig that swims away from you when you fish it oh and the helicopter lure that we all know works and catches fish, not these lures are made to catch fishermen and fisherwoman and sounds like it is catching alot of anglers.lol

Just my 2 cents

It didn't catch nothin' but my attention for about 30 minutes. Just cause I stand and watch people gettin their hair cut thru the window at Super-Cuts don't mean I gotta pay the stylist.

I agree with you about the term, "Slobs". I watched it once...not again. Since this has not been brought up, thought that I would. The obvious captured audience (Bass) that were attacking the red light from a laser pointer...Have you ever seen that done to a cat or dog? They will also attempt to grab it as they will a beam of light from any source. Now the poor Bass will develop cataracks on their lenses and will have to depend upon their lateral lines to locate prey! 1,000 hours on the light for each lure! "I catch 80% of all my fish on this lure"....marketing, boyz, marketing. Think about this...how many of you Fathers open up your gift from your spouse and children on Father's Day and break out into a big smile when you see those backassward swimming minnows or flashing light lures, given with love by your well meaning families? Wait 6 months and buy them for a song at the discount stores. Tight lines, guys and better use that Pro line (60 lb test) before tossing one of those lures into the depths of your favorite lake!...../MikeW)

I think it is a Yankee term, sorta like the other weird sayings they have like toad and pig.
