Scott, the pumps that operate them are hydraulic. The only electricity used is when you hit the switch to deploy or take up, and the amount of electricity needed for that is miniscule. You could pick em up and put em down all day without ever noticing any difference in your batteries. You obviously are against them and don't know much about them from your statements. LOL, well, I'm not against them at all and I do know plenty about them, I just don't think they are worth the money for the average weekend angler, simple as that. If a person likes them, has the extra money to buy one or two, and actually uses them, then by all means go for it.

It's quite obvious they are hydraulic but still require electricity from your battery to operate the hydraulics (sort of like a tilt/trim unit). So, every time you raise or lower, it requires SOME power from your battery, probably no different than running a depth finder or aerator, but again, just one more thing drawing amps on occasion. If I was a guide or fished for a living, I would definitely have one because I would use it more often. But, I still think I would only be using it during the spring months when wight fishing so the remainder of the year it's going to see little to no service (I guess maybe when I pull up on shore I could use it some). To me, it's just too much money for seasonal use. So much of our time fishng is in deeper water where it is useless. Granted, if you fish shallow water exclusively then you might find more times to use it. I can see it being used in and around pad fields some but I prefer to "go after" a bass that gets tangled up after being hooked. Either way, I might end up with one on a boat some day but I would prefer to spend my $1K-$2K on items I get more use from on a weekly basis.

I never thought about the tree top trick. Right now, I have a tree grabber that I have attached to a cleat and if it's windy as I'm drifting by, I'll grab a tree and swing around, but I wondered if it would be nice to just drop 'anchor' where ever and fish.

Do they attach to the motor bracket or directly to the hull?

Either or. My boat has a jackplate and mine are attached via a 1/2" plate steel bracket that bolts onto the jack plate. Most of the saltwater guys (flats boats) go thru hull.

I have one on my boat (wish I could afford a second one)
I have found many uses for the power pole other then just an anchor "While fishing"
I use it always when launching my boat - I fish alone most of the time and it is very quick and easy to beach the boat and drop the pole to hold the boat in place (even when the waves are crashing in)
It is also great when there is no room at the weigh in or the bank is too steep to "Beach" your boat.
I can just nose the boat up to the steep bank, loading dock, or rocks and drop the pole down. the pole holds the boat tight to shore and i know it will still be there when i park the tow vehicle.
I have also used it when i am fishing windy rock banks, I am in 10 feet or deeper water, I drop the pole and if I catch a fish, I dont have to continue working the trolling motor while i fight and unhook the fish. the pole will stop my boat at the 8 foot depth instaed of blowing it into the rock bank.
And it also works great while fishing for spooked fish under docks as once you set it, you can stay there as long as you want without continually repositioning with the trolling motor.
The power pole was less money installed then one of the fish finders on the boat, well worth the money.
North Texas Marine installed mine for somewhere around $1500.00 and it came with a mounted switch in the dash and two remote control key pads

Am I glad I have one...yes...the powerpole was worth more than the money to me, so I traded Tommy at Rockwall Marine some greenbacks for a powerpole! Excellent Installation...and to tail in on Fouzmans coment...the battery is totally unaffected by the pole...not sure where that whole thing was going! Pretty sure cranking up my 250XS t

takes more battery than raising and lowering the pole 100 times.
