Good friend of mine came by today (Sun) to test our friendship. Showed me 23 crappie that came out of Alan Henry. He had 4 fish over 2 lbs. Probably 8-10 fish were 10 1/2". He is another "waterwagon man" and has access to some land that comes down to Grape Creek. He said he'd take me but wouldn't tell me exactly where he caught them, but I know where he unloads, so it was in Grape. Did say the fish were in about 15' this morning and when he quit about 3:30 he was catching them in 8-10'. Said he caught nothing up shallow, but a huge bass broke him off in 3' of water. Didn't have to ask what he was using, the boy doesn't use anything but home made green and blue jigs. Well, there goes a good nights sleep!!!

I am going to try to make to AH this weekend for the 1st time. Will probably try for bass some, but would really like to get into a mess of crappie. Are there any decent maps available? I would also appreciate any suggestions for a newbie on the lake.

Sand Man: Yo too tough for me, I get scared just thinkin' oh havin' the Wagon on the big water like AH. JBT is one thing, and course with that water ya can walk to the bank. AH, hole nuder story, she big, BIG Water! I do SO poorly there anyway I can not imagine being confined to the Wagon and striking out, esp wit what ya gotta pay to get in.

Say,nod, nod, wink, wink, how 'bouts showin' some of us udder Waggoners 'em brush piles on the Big Muddy, nuf said!

Backlash 47,

You can get a small free map at Grub's store. Not much, but will help you get around. Turn left at the boat ramp (north)and follow that winding snake all the way around to the dam. By then you will be going south. Then just keep going and following the Big Grape Creek. There will be no lack of brush for you to look at and fish for bass or crappie. Take your pick for depth. Tree tops sticking out of 35' of water all the way up to too shallow to run.

Check out www.lakealanhenry.com for fishing reports and online map.

Might even see an old faded red Glastron with an old pickup spotlight attached to a post sticking up by the steering wheel and an 85 Force engine with a couple of fat old F**ts in it.

Backlash 47,

Also forgot to put in that any of the creeks have good places for bass. Just take your pick. You can go up Little Grape Creek before you get to the dam. It breaks off of the main lake to the south about half way from the boat dock to the dam. Gobbler creek is also a great looking place. Go south then west from the boat dock for a couple of miles and it will break back to the north. You will go over it on a bridge just before you get to the store and entrance gate. I have also heard that Sand Creek is good, but I have not been to it. Too much good cover and spots in these other creeks to be spending all my time boating around.

Later on, after the water gets warmer, just pick a spot to start. That place is wall to wall rocky drop offs, under water cedar trees and cover. There are bass in every nook, corner and cove.

I fished AH yesterday and caught bass in Grape Creek shallow with a white spinner bait. Probably be going out tomorrow as well to check out the Eagle 320 that I just installed on the front of the boat. I tried to find crappie for about 4 hours yesterday but I couldn't get a bite. I'm one sorry crappie angler. laugh

Crappie Hooker,

What would a newbie on AH use to snag a few tissue mouths, jigs, livebait? If live, is there a place on the lake where a fellow could buy a few of those pesky minnows?

If you see a 16' Lowe, 50 hp 'rude, and a bimine top laid down, swing over if you like.

Watch that line.

Bl 47,

Just as you get near the lake entrance, you will see Grub's store on the west side of the road. Minnows available. If store is closed, they have a self pay box, and you can still get minnows. That most likely would not be a problem for the weekend, as the weather is supposed to be warm. People will be out in droves, so you know the store will start staying open most days now.

As for jigs, you got me. Some say white is a good color. I have caught only a very sparse few crappie on jigs there. I know that it can be done, it just takes a very good approach.

Mike M.

Your gonna love that Eagle 320!!!!

Lash Man: 'Use the force' actually use/take Mike's advice to use minnows. I have seen and talked with JR Ortiz that guides on the lake. JR swears, and I have no reason to doubt, that he kills 'em on white curly tail jigs. I slaughter 'em on JBT with jigs, HOWEVER that is JBT and I cannot get to go for a jig on AH! Hard to beat a minnow w/ crappie nibbles at AH!

We fish ah every weekend and we catch all our fish on jigs. Here latley I don't think I could buy a bite. There has been a lot of rain, but with all this warm weather hopefully things will change.

Thanks for the info Crappie Hooker and MarkA. My experience has also been best with those pesky critters.

Can either of you tell me if there is a place where a fellow might set up a camper trailer with at least electricity near the lake?

Hey, MarkA, you think we might be soil brothers? Class of 70 here.
