Ive been crappie fishin on stickups in 5-12ft of water between bass fishin the last couple days. Caught 5 in 5 minutes yesterday and that was all. Lost 2 at the boat today that were maybe 2lbs a piece. I need some advice. What color and size jigs do you guys use when jiggin stickups like this. What kind of action do ya'll put on them. It seemed every single one just inhaled it on the initial fall, but never caught any jigging?

the number one jig i go for is a chartruese panfish assassing with a 1/16 oz. jig head on 6 lb mr. crappie hi-vis. as far as jig action go, i vary it until i find out what they want. i usually fish them by holding my rod still with an occasional jerk or two, then a side swipe, but other techniques work just as well.
..fish shiver when they hear my name...

skillz, I think you'll find as a general rule in crappie fishing....less is best. By that I mean that there is very little movement required from you to the jig to entice the crappie to hit. If you're fishing from a boat, it's practically impossible to hold the jig completely still, and the action imparted by the boat (and you moving in the boat) is really all that is required. As you said in your post...they inhaled it on the drop...very common. As for color, let the fish tell you what they want. I generally start out with something with chartreuse or white on it. Good fishin'.........

Skillz, Do you have a favorite color for Bass that works on the lake you're fishing? Some colors seem to work better on different lakes and I've seen a lot of Bass fishermen use the same colors for crappie that they've had success on with Bass. Some colors like Chrt., Black/Chrt., Black/Pink, Red/White, Red/Chrt. will work just about anywhere (esp. this time of year). Be VERY careful foolin' with the crappie, you just might wind up selling all your bass fishing stuff!!!

You guys are good.
Fished it again in the cold wind and caught 8 in an hour, one weighed 2.2 and one 2.0. One thing I found interesting is that I would drop a jig, catch one or two real quick then nadda. Changed jig colors or types and bam. That happened several times, as soon I would change something I would catch fish immediatly. Caught em on pepper assassins, spiked assassins, greenish chart maribous, and black/chart tubes. Fishin on pinkston by the way.
Thanks again guys, you all hit the nail on the head.

Skillz - have you had a chance to fish Lake Mise (Mize/sp?)? My last two years at SFA, I spent a lot of time wading that little lake for crappie and that was back in 81-82. It's been such a long time that I forget just how to get there but someone around should know. It's shallow enough that you can wade it easily and catch the fire out of crappie.
Have you tried Lake Nac. yet cause there's some huge crappie over there as well. Hit the timber past the power lines crossing the lake.
Good luck, Chris - SFA '82

Outdoor-add, I believe so, but that was back in 81/82 and had too many beers since then and not quite sure...but it should be real close. Some local folks should know or even the SFA Fishing club members/society should know.
Pinkston wasn't too good of a crappie lake back when I was at SFA, but darn good for bass.

BB- graduated in 84,mize used to have a honor box at the gate to pay for fishing. Made it tough to choose between cold beer or fishing there.
