just wanted some feedback, looking to buy a all around good bass reel, i have about 80 bucks to spend but should i just hold out and get somthing a little better? i love to fish with bass worms but i do throw cranks and spinners and tops, but every reel i look at seems to target one or two of these catagories but not all, and have differnt gear ratios...

p.s. headed to coleto creek next weekend anyone heard anything good or what they are biting on, i would like to have an edge if i can since i have never been there before...

think like a fish, no matter how weird it gets...

Welcome to the forum!

As you might hear a bunch of people say, it's the glove that fits the best, regardless of price. You may find a reel in that price range that you wouldnt trade for the world, and the only way you'll know is if you start putting some in your hands at the store.

My advice is to find something geared in the middle, not too fast, not too slow, have at least 5 ball bearings for a smooth retrieve, and "palm" really well...meaning you like the way it fits in your hand. Before you buy anything, mount it on a rod. Sometimes that helps

Havent been to coleto in a LONG while, but keep asking and someone will chime in.

Good luck!

I agree you need to put it on a rod to get a good feel. Find one you like, I would check out the customer service of the reel in case problems arise.

for $80 the best reel out there is probably an Ambassadeur 4600C3.

You're not going to find a more bulletproof reel for that money. It is "fast" for it's gear ratio at 25" inches per crank from a 5.3:1 reel. This puts in to the same IPT as a lot of 6:1 reels, so you get the torque of the lower gear ratio, with the crank speed of a higher geared reel. The 4600 is the best size for normal bassin', as the 5500 is overkill on the line capacity.

I just asked the same question to the guy at the fishing reel counter at Cabela's. He was very knowlegable, very helpful, and explained a lot. I'm just getting back into fishing and my knowledge isn't the best that's for sure, but he recommended the Shimano Citica 200E, as a great all around reel. It's around $120.00 there, but you can pick it up for under $100 on ebay with free shipping. Just my 2 cents.

I love Coleto Creek but I will not go back until it comes back up. It is over 3 feet low and in that lake, to me, it affects the fishing negatively.

Be safe,
