Go ahead and install one. There is no reason that it would interfear with your engine. Just remember that you need to vaccuum thru a filter, never prime thru a filter. If you prime thru, you could blow the filter apart and cause damage to you engine.

Mike,
I'm about to install water separator on my 98 Merc 200 Offshore (carbed). Are you saying that I should install it in-line before the primer bulb (between bulb and tank) or after the bulb (between bulb and motor)?

I'm understanding you to say that it should be placed prior to the bulb.

FYI. I have 3 boats all with merc's and the first thing I have done with each is install a water separator. I lost a motor because of water in my offshore and will NOT ever live without one again. I change the filter every 50 hrs on my bay, bass and offshore boats. It's a good idea especially with the new E-10 fuels. Also add a water remover. I use Amsoil and have for years and to this day do not have problems. Good Luck!
