I found another boat at a reasonable price and asked if he had the title.

Yes was the reply.

I asked if the title was in HIS name.

Uhhhhhh..no, it is in the name of my "friend" who I bought it from.

Do I run on this one? Would I have to track down this "friend" in order to get it in my name?

Thanks, Chuckwagon

PS....so far I have not found a single seller that has a title to his boat in HIS OWN NAME!

Tell him you will buy the boat as soon as he has it titled in his name.

Can you legally sell a boat without having the title in your own name??

What is up with this? This makes 6 querries about boats that I have pursued where the guy has the boat but not the title.

Chuchwagon: To answer your question about "can you legally sell a boat if you don't have the title" It would be the same as me selling your car without me having the title,

What if you have the title....but it is in SOMEONE ELSE'S name?

Can you get that boat titled in YOUR name while at the seller's house or do I have to track down the guy whose name is on the title and get....whatever?

Only if the original owner has signed over the title and it is notarized is it a legal sale. I once bought a used car from a guy that was selling it for a friend and they had signed it over to him and notarized and he signed it and we had it notarized again to me. That was several years ago and honestly the only way I'd feel comfortable doing it. Otherwise it would be like my wife selling my boat without me knowing or authorizing the sale without my signature signing it over and a stamp from a notary. As stated earlier stay away from Craigs list nothing but crooks or questionable moral practices going on there.

you seem to "find" these deals..I would just call TPWD and get the info from the folks you will end up dealing with..not something, someone "told" you... It may save a big headache..
