I have been told that the rule of thumb is 5hp for 10m-12'
10hp for 14'
15hp for 16'
25 hp for 18'

I have a 5hp 4 cycle on my 14' v-bottom and it is adequate but a 10 would be a lot better. I think a 25 is a bit much.

mboy - I had an 18HP Merc on a 14' v-hull aluminum. It was probably just a little bit too much. If you are comfortable with tiller steering in rough water, it will be no problem. But the boat could get away from me if I was not careful.

That motor would push my boat at about 28MPH if my memory serves me well.

Look at the USCG tag on it and buy the max that it says. My bet is that it is rated for a 15hp. It should go in the low to mid 20's with a 15hp. That is plenty fast for a flat bottom boat.

I have an old 25 evinrude on a 14 ft lonestar v bottom and it romps. I dont think I would put anything bigger as far as a tiller steer motor than a 25. Now my buddy has a 50 merc on a 14 ft crestliner , it has forward controls, now that thing is a blast.

COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !
