Well, living on Whitney and fishing my first jig this past weekend, well my leadhead was beat all to hell. Chipped up. I was wondering, do you guys just leave it like that, or repaint it? If so, what is a good quality paint that will withstand banging some rocks.
I know all paint will eventually chip hitting up against rocks, but was just curious on how you guys delt with that.
thanks

I have a football head that lost paint on the rocks at Hubbard. I'd be interested in the answer to this as well.

I make them and have a paint process that the rocks or anything else can't touch. Be happy to send you some samples for you to try. The fish don't mind the paint much but it sures messes with our mind when it gets chipped up. The answer though is you can repaint it but if all you do is "re-dip" then the paint will chip right back off.

There really isn't much you can do to fix a chipped up head but brown or black paint markers will work temporarily. The best thing to do is find a company that puts the jig through a process that will eliminate chipping. Either look for heads that have been powder coated or that have been airbrushed and sealed with a BRUSHED ON epoxy. This will make all the difference in the world.

Most of my jigs have no paint left on them and when I swap for a newly painted one, I usually don't notice anymore bites. It's more of a mental thing, I think. If it bothers you then buy a few hundred and retie every 10 minutes or find some powder coated jig heads.

I fish FH Jigs all of the time and feel that if the bass look long enough and hard enough to see the paint is gone, you aint gettin bit...
Also, thats a good testimony to your knot tying skills if you bang em off rocks that bad and drag em through abuse and you still have the jig

Again, not as much an issue to the fish. Most anglers prefer their baits to stand up and hold up and look good and not chip and get what they pay for.....same ol story. If ultimately it didn't matter then everything we buy would have bright bright silver heads or plain balsa wood or plastic and places like Picasso, Talon or me wouldn't invest any time in getting paint to hold up and stay on the baits. Anglers, for the most part, want their baits to hold up and not be bare lead after 5 casts. I fish hard in the rocks/grass/beat the heck out of docks and the jig/jighead still looks good. Its not what I think the fish want but what I expect the bait to stand up to when I fish.

thanks IMO, it doesn't matter. I have a couple 'special' jigs. But if it matters to you and your confidence you can use sharpies to color them back in. I carry a black sharpie that I use for my fireline when it gets worn and I have used it to color in jigheads.

there is a few companies here in texas that put thier jigheads through very extensive paint processes,I know for a fact Black Angel Jigs and Talon both do a great job at this...as said above theres a few other companies that stand behind thier paint as well.I think if the chipped paint is a confidence issue for you,you should pick up a few different brands of jigs and find which one holds up the best for you.

I use Ezee Jigs and I dont ever have a problem with the paint chipping. However, I have used jigs before that chipped but It never changed the bite on the jig.

It stands to reason that the skirt and trailer are the main things the bass sees, but they may see the color of the head as well. Who knows? I use a brown jig with specks of green that has been good for me. Wish I knew if the head color makes any difference. When they get chipped, I keep using them and can't say I notice any difference in the catch rate.

We do use a three part paint process that makes ours very chip resistant. I have not noticed much difference in bites with or without paint. I actually have a guy that orders from us about once a year and he does not want any paint at all on the jig. He says he gets more bites from no paint! I think it is all in our heads.
