I have always put mine in freezer bags with water and then put them in the freezer. Always have had good luck for 6 months or more this way. From the articles, I may just see about changing my ways though. Sounds like the way to go to freeze first then put in the cold water and back into the freezer to keep water out of the flesh. Maybe Santa will bring me a vacum sealer.

Great question and even better advice. I was wondering about vacuum packing. How long do they last and is it really better than freezing in water?

Its like this Salsa & Turd.. We catch enough to eat but think we might not get in to them again so we treat it like finding gold.  We take what we need to get by and then we stick the rest in the bank. I guess I am trying to look out for my investment as long term as I can!!! Plus I like to give to those folks that can't or don't want to catch em & clean em themselves.

I freeze mine in water. I have some that has been in 18 months and you cant tell the difference if they were caught the day before. I have never had a problem with the fish that I freeze.

Tracy is right we keep in freezer about a yr and still good. Freeze with water in a freezer bag and push all the air out. Easy as pie

I'm lucky to even get them in the Freezer period.. Most of the time they go directly into Beer Batter and Hot Oil ... LOL

I put my fillets in plastic bags, fill with water, and squeeze out the air. Keeps for up to a year (or longer I suppose). Never noticed a taste problem. Always write teh species, date, lake.

12 months!! Then I gotta alot of fish that wont go in the trash!! Crappie are leaner than most fish so I suppose that helps as well
