I went to high island this weekend and i destroyed my reel. I was in the water alot and i soaked my reel. When I got home I tried to clean what i could. I woke up the next mornin to find the bearings shot in my reel. Any suggestions on a reel i can use in saltwater. Thx in advance

spinning or casting. If spinning almost all on here recommended Shimano Stradic for reasonable price and superior quality. I found 4 on Craigs list for $50 each.

penn sargus without question. I've soaked it in saltwater while wadefishing for over 8 hours straight. All I had to do was rinse it in fresh water and give it a few spins....good as new. No kidding!

Any of the Penn SS or other black and gold Penn spinning reels work great. I also use Shimano Citica and Curado without any problems.
Be sure to wash everything down with fresh water as quickly as possible after using. Avoid dunking in the salt if at all possible.

If i get a slatwater reel and dunk it in the water will it automaticly freeze up on me or will it die off down the road. The reason i ask this is because when im in the water when i have to fix my bait on the hook i have to dunk it in the water.

If you don't rinse it off or have it cleaned regularly it will lock up on you eventually depending on the quality of the reel. You don't have to dunk your reel when baiting your hook, I've seen a lot of people do that when baiting hooks or trying to get a fish off while wading. Release the bail or thumb bar and bring your rod tip up while letting line off the reel until you can reach and grab the hook to bait it. Next either but the top section of cork in your mouth or your rod under you armpit to free your other hand and bait your hook.

If you cant get to a water faucet quickly enough after a trip, dunk the reel in your ice chest water a few times as a precaution. Personally, I put all my rods/reels in the shower at the hotel room or at home.
Now, Donald...please pick John Bolton for your running mate.

The reason i ask this is because when im in the water when i have to fix my bait on the hook i have to dunk it in the water. Learn how to bait up hooks and release fish by sticking the reel up in you armpit to hold it. I've even seen guys hold the cork portion of the rod (just forward of the reel) in their teeth. I've accidentally dunked mine several times. It's inevitable. Just rinse your reels thoroughly with fresh water. Before the saltwater dries is preferable. Quality reels will resist corrosion much better than the cheap stuff. I don't like equipment failure so I spend the money and buy good quality gear. I maintain it meticulously and I don't have failures. The biggest problem with saltwater is that it's saltwater.

Thanks for the info, I will try this techniques of not putting my reel in the water. I just dont want to spend the money then accidently drop it in the water and it freeze up on me.

I usually use the Quantum Blue Runner 60-80 series on my saltwater rods. Tough, dependable and durable....love my Quantums! Proper maintenance is a must for all saltwater reels, hose 'em down wipe dry and when at home clean and re-lube...they will last forever, almost!

The velcro strap on the left side chest area of Columbia & Magellan shirts is supposed to be a rod keeper, I usually hook my sunglasses in it, but it comes in handy when keeping your reel out of the water.
