Football Head Jig at a rocky shore...Red Eye Shad burnt back parallel to weed line. Not much of a shallow top water guy, I know I'm missing out, but....More of a crankbait guy

Most people don't know its happening, but there is often a MUCH stronger bite happening in deep water on prime structure at first light. I have caught my biggest sacks in 15ft+ water at first light on c-rigs, and DD22's.
But, I admit, there is nothing like watching those hawgs blast a super spook!

Amen...I love dragging FH Jig or Carolina Rigged Brush Hog out deep and cranking Shad DD 22 while my partner is beating the bank...I just turn and cast parallel or away from the bank and I normally have the first two or three in the boat. He may get some smaller ones cruising. Just lucky for me I guess

Nice, I would have to say my 3 most favorite would be: 1.Ribbit Frog 2.Yellow Magic 3.Buzzbait
Although I watch a lot of tournaments on t.v. and see the pros reaching for the crankbaits and pulling off the bank around first light and hammering em! I have a tough time understanding that because at first thing in the morning I love using topwaters and beating the bank...can anyone explain exactly how they are catching them out there and why they often choose that rather than tossing a topwater in shallow water? I think the first thing that we all need to understand is that fish feed early in the morning all over the lake, shallow and deep. The pros know this and go to their best school of fish and hope to cash in on that feeding frenzy. How many times have we all caught our biggest fish of the day in the first hour? I fish Fork alot and as much as we enjoy that topwater alot of the time, somtimes there is a better bite to be had. My partner drove this point home to me not too long ago. I was throwing the Magic and he started out with a rattletrap. I caught 2 but he caught 8 including a 8lber and a 5lber. That drove the point home to me.

I agree and my post echoed what your partner taught you...I dont like shallow water, not at all...I'd rather fish in 8-15' of water all day long...I know thats not normal, but even if the fish are shallow, the bigger ones I personally think are a drop/ledge/break away in deeper water. Kinda like fast food restraunt...Do you live at McDonalds? Or do you live somewhere else and drive through the drive thru to get food and go back home? I think the LM hang out and move up the "drive thru"(shallows) for a quick burger (shad)

The reason the pro's go deep first is they have had several days to locate the school they're fishing. We have ONE DAY to locate and catch what we can. They're fishing for more than we make in a year,so size REALLY MATTERS to them. We're doing it for fun ,and can't resist seeing that big blow-up when a 4 takes our topwater in a foot of water.

+1 The fish where ever they are located usually at bite better in low light conditions. If they are shallow that applies and it also applies if they are deep. If your just fun fishing then throw what is the most fun for you to catch them on, but if your tournament fishing you had better fish your best fish first and with the technique that will get you the biggest bites, not the one you have the most fun throwing.
