The range cubes and hen scratch will draw in carp and cats not sure about the crappie. Better to place cover on structure rather than bait IMO unless it's with something like hay bales.

My Uncle would spray chawfish $hi# on his jig. That's what he called it. Welcome to the TFF.

Occasionally (if the bite is slow) i'll spray some "panfish juice" or add on a white or chartreuse Berkely crappie nibble. Other than that though, I don't think it matters when they're hammerin' jigs or spawnin. My 2 cents.

Welcome aboard, j vaughn. Think you'll like TFF and get plenty of advice and help when you need, on just about any area lake.

Found this on another site and tried it today, don't know if it helped or not but a friend and I caught 42 crappie this morning when from other reports the fishing was tough. Lots of wind and boat traffic had the boat pounding the water. Steve

I stumbled across a little trick that may help some of you. It's a proven winner, and I never fish without it.

I buy a regular size bag of Kroger "salad" or "popcorn" shrimp, the small ones. I then cut each into four or five pieces, and cut up a couple of hundred like this. Then I put them in a plastic cup, add water and lots of salt (about as much salt as water), and let them sit in the regrigerator over night. Then I rinse them off, and store in a small Ziplock Snack Bag, the smallest size. I've tried all sorts of ways to store them, but the small bags are the best. You can easily keep 300+ pieces in one of these bags. Each Kroger bag makes hundreds and hundreds of shrimp. I've gotten as many as 1,000 when I cut them small, but I don't recommend this. A friend made the season one year on one Kroger bag, for less than $5.00. Just keep the salted shrimp bits in the regriferator and they will last forever. But...the fish take them so fast you might be surprised how quick they go!

If you have special preferences you can doctor them up a little. You can add food colors, for example, if you wanted red shrimp, or a color that works well on a certain lake or pond. You can add garlic and other favorite flavors/scents if you like this. Larger shrimp bits seem to help the effectiveness of a plastic worm hook, if you like bass fishing.

Do you mean you put these little pieces of shrimp on the jig hook or you are just using this on a regular hook?

I've heard tell what generally works best in terms of jig scents is that which provides the fisherman with the most confidence but does not scare away crappie nor reduce their propensity to bite.

Wonder if there is any reputable, published science on crappie senses? hmmm....

You attach the shrimp to your jig hook. Use as you would a crappie nibble.

sjordan,

Not a bad idea, but alot of work to me when you can just buy spray scents or nibbles. With the nibbles (mainly to make it easier to fit in my jig box) I just dump them out of the little cannister and put them in a tiny zip-lock bag.
Maybe it's all because my time fishin' these days is fairly limited.

I think Sheldon has a good thought there and it kinda goes well with my first post/thought. Welcome back, Sheldon.

I will bet that shrimp thing would be a killer thing for red-ears all "sunfish".

I believe that was his main use but said it would work for crappie.
