I went in Jamaica beach surf sunday morning. Got live shrimp from the bait shop on the right after valero coming from Galveston. Caught one speck 14.5 inches about 7 AM and then the trash fish started knocking the bait, leaving only the head or killing the shrimp. Shrimp were way too big and only lasted about an hour and a half. Got the castnet out and caught some mullet and used these without any luck under a popping cork. The conditions looked perfect with a lot of anglers out but not much trout action to tell you the truth. Saw a few people land some Spanish Mackrel but I thought it would have been better given the conditions. First time fishing in about 10 years, just returned from overseas so I need to get better.

better luck next time. i have better luck off the rocks on the seawall.i went friday caught lots of spanish macks.lost lots of baits.good luck on your next trip.

what kind of bait did you use?

i used finger mullet,shrimp,and crokers.used my throw net to catch bait in the surf.

I started of Friday morning fishing off the jetties by the Flagship Hotel and caught a few Specs and Trout on shrimp and then moved over to Crystal Beach on Friday with cut bait, squid and shrimp, and caught alot of Specs and even caught my first Red in the surf.

for the jetties where you fishing with a popping cork?

I was actually fishing on the bottom all day but a couple of guys next to me were fishing on top and were catching trout.

don't you get hung up on the rocks when fishing on the bottom on the jetty? I have not been there in years but thinking about going tomorrow

i never get hung up.when your working your baits pay attention when you get close to the rocks reel fast enouph to get your bait up close to the top of the water.

Yep, I agree. I bring my sister out there who never fishes and she catches rocks right and left when I'm catching fish. I rarely get caught out there.
