A buddy of mine just got back from Colorado. He doesn't really fish much but he went out with a guide and ended up catching a 21", 5 lb Rainbow. The guide said it was Hog. I couldn't really tell him. Is it?

5 lbs is a nice rainbow.
The Colorado state record rainbow trout is 18lbs 5 oz, and 32 inches.

Used to fish up in Vermont, and a five pounder is a really nice fish. I never caught one anywhere near that big in the rivers up there, but they do exist. They can grow pretty big (Steelhead) and even grow real teeth. Largest I saw were out of Lake Champlain or during the spawning run. Regardless, taking a 5 lb. anything on fly gear would be a real treat!

That is definitely a good fish. I fished the tailwater below Taylor Res once and caught a 5 lb Rainbow and it was the smallest fish of the day. It was the 12lber that was too big for the net that got me completely hooked on fly fishing. They introduced mysis shrimp as a food source in several Reservoirs which produced huge trout below the dams. The Blue below Dillon is one example. Taylor is another. Those shrimp are very small and packed with protein. Hence, the 18lb state record. No matter where he caught it I bet he wont forget it!

Since in two of Oregons fishing zones any rainbow over 16 inches, and all other sea run Rainbows over 20 inches are all called Steelhead Trout which put them in a different classification then your buddy definitely has a dang nice fish !!! David C.
4 out of 5 voices in my head say call in sick and go fishing !
