What do you guys consider to be too windy to head out on the lake? Another quesiton, and this one is kind of embarassing that I don't know this, if the weather report states "Winds S 10 - 20mph". Does that mean the wind is blowing to the south or blowing from the south?

- The wind affects different lakes in different ways. If you have a lake with a lot of large creek arms and the lake has parts that run North, South, East, and West...then you can fish it in virtually any wind because there are always protected areas somewhere (provided a ramp is nearby) We have fished on days where the wind was 30+, but were able to fish protected areas and still have a great day on the water. - Winds S 10-20 means the wind it blowing FROM the South

Does that mean the wind is blowing to the south or blowing from the south? I believe blowing to the south-north wind, blowing from the south-south wind. Lot of time it could be a southwest wind. I would say anything over 20mph too much. A person can find sheltered spots, but getting there and back becomes the problem. Having an alternative plan helps. If its to windy on the main lake, find coves, or marina's to fish, or call it miller time!

If you fish a lake enough, you can establish some great fishing areas that allow you to launch and fish without actually hitting the "open" water.
That normally means creating some brushpiles or condos near the ramp.

Fish'n a Lund, For me, right now, it's 15 mph. But will increase that to 20 mph just to see how I like launching and loading with that high of wind speed.

In Texas, the S means blowing from the south....the 10-20 means add those two numbers together and that is what it'll be blowing....no matter what the weather man says...

Howdy, You might want to consider the boating safety course. You can take it online as well. The certificate gets you a discount on your boat insurance and is some nice training as well. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/learning/boater_education/

In my new Lund....I don't care how much it's blowing. I've fished effectively for sandbass in open water in 20MPH + winds. too.

yep a "south" wind hits you in the face if you are facing south. And the adding the wind speed range together is about right on Ray Bob and Lavon. Lots of open north-south room to kick some big rollers!

FishN'Lund, When we say (yeah, I do weather for a livin') it's "south 10-20 mph", that means the wind is blowing FROM the South TOWARD the North with sustained winds averaging between 10 and 20 mph. Jason, I know you were jabbin' at me. :p But i'd expect that from a 'sip. --Eric AgAlum93'
