Now - I have been a crappie fisherman for about 10 years now. And this is the first time I have ever seen anything like this.

For the most part, I only crappie fish on Lake Somerville. I was fishing last weekend in about 6 feet of water..using a minnow...about 2 feet deep. Like a frieght train, my cork went under and I pulled up the strangest looking fish.

I had the body of a crappie but the color and markings of a perch/sunfish. It was sunset orange and black. The mouth was a crappie mouth as was the body. It was about 11 inches and around a pound.

Any idea what that was? The one crappie I have ever scaught in that lake were whites and blacks....

Wkf we call them goggle eyes in east TX. They call them Rock Bass up yonder. Got's a big mouth, I guess they like to eat? Warmouth's like gravel to rocky bottoms, clean water and are fun to catch! Can get 3 to 4 pound's. so mark that spot, cause more are possible.

Theres only two kinds. Good ole big'ems. And big ole good ems.

Barry,

Green Sunfish, goggle-eye perch, rockbass, warmouth are all different names for the same fish. Green sunfish is the most common and the others are regional names.

Just like a crappie goes by sac-a-lait and white perch.

Here in North Central Texas, AKA DFW we call that a goggle eye!(it is a rock bass, there is a subspecies that is the green sunfish, and it does not get as big as the rock bass). They get pretty good sized, and a one pounder is mighty good eating! When they are in a procreating mode, they are absolutely beautiful fish! The males get almost as black as a male crappie at spawn, and the bluish/aqua threads of color it has running through out its body get absolutely brilliant! The one thing though, is that after an initial kamikaze attack on your bait(live or artificial, makes no difference to them) they basically give up. Love to catch em on a jig/slip cork setup.they give that small cork a downhill roller coaster ride when they strike!

warmouth, green sunfish, and rockbass are actually 3 different species.

Warmouth

Green Sunfish

Rock Bass

In rock bass, there is a single dorsal fin with 10 to 12 spines and an anal fin with 6 spines

Warmouth have three spines in the anal fin, 10 spines in the dorsal fin, and small teeth are present on the tongue.

Catfish_Hunter--Good info on the different species. I used to have a key to identify fresh water fish from my college days, but cant find it now. Where did you get the info for the different species. Spines, rays teeth etc are all used to id fish and I would like to have that book again. Please let me know where you got that info Thanks

If you can't dazzle 'em with brilliance, then baffle 'em with B--- S--- !!

I found it on TX parks and wildlife's website on green sunfish and warmouth. Got the rock bass info off a Canadian site. TX doesn't even list 'em as bein' here! But I'm sure that's just cos there's few of 'em, cos I'm sure they're around.
