Any one catching crappie in the San Gabriel or Willis creek yet? I have not tried fishing there yet because of the high runoff and muddy banks. Has any one fished the Willis park slough? This warm weather should set the crappie in motion soon. You locals please let us keep up with the spawn. Thanks

Thanks for the reply, I know where fox park is, but what are you refering to as fox bottom, I dont know the lake that well. I would like to try some jig fishing for crappie next week if this warm weather holds. What do you know about night fishing with lanterns and minnows?

Fox Bottom,
Up the river, the red circled number 6 parking location on the map Ranger R displayed is were Fox Bottom is located it is the big bend in the river channel. The crappie should be turning on in the two sloughs on each side of the Taylor Park ramp. Also up in Fillies Slough up by the pavilion in Willis Creek Park. Don't be intimated by the muddy water, the crappie are extremely shallow. Its not uncommon to catch them in Six to eight inches of water. Check out the rock jetties, on both Friendship and Taylor park. And If you do fish any of these areas by boat, take precautions especally if you get in a little close, you may get a good toung lashing, and may even hear a whistling projectile go bye every now and then.......lol Hope you have a great fishing trip..........2gray

I had no idea there were other TFF'ers in the big town of Granger!!! I have not tried any of the crappie sloughs yet this year. I think they are letting water out right now and that always seems to scatter the spawning crappie. Good luck.....

Crappie C, yep I been around awhile, just lately started jumping in and running my mouth a little every now and then. I've seen you out on the lake in that Blue Wave.... I'm on the Redneck toon or eather on my son's White Bullet. I'll have to put a few pictures on showing off our Condos. Good luck this year ......2 gray

Thanks Ranger R and 2 Gray for the information and map. I will try the locations next week. Don't know how this weather will hold, probably start raining again. Is location 6 on the map the same as the primitave launch location? Will also walk into willis park slough and try it. I haven't had a good mess of crappie in about 2 years. I had cancer in my leg and am just now getting up and around on it after surgery/radiation and physical therepy. Hope to be a threat to the crappie population this year. Will let you know how I do on the catching.

fishdaddy, #6 is not the same place as the primitave boat ramp. Keep heading past the primiative turn off on toward Granger and take the first right you will go through a couple of tight curves and then take the first right after that. that road dead ends , there is a parking lot there. You have to walk from there to the river. Years ago it was a great place for night fishing off the bank with lanterns for crappie. It is a pretty good little hike though..... Good luck next week.......

Crappie Condo and 2 Gray,

We're thinking of heading up that way tomorrow morning. Might try below the spillway. Is there a better gameplan for crappie/whites/...etc? Don't want to try the mud up stream, lol. I hate those mud banks! lol. How crowded has it been in the parks? Thanks. DC

Daniel - Wish I could be more help, but between work and outboard troubles I have not been on the lake in the last 2 wks. Best bet for crappie, target backs of sloughs 2ft to 6 inches. These sunny days should have them moving shallow. If the lake level is still dropping, it could really scatter the Crappie. If the crappie don't bite, you may have to get muddy and head to the Gabriel or Willis creek.

I fish Granger too. I have a center console as well, and it's like fishing from a leaf in the wind. I have been out there many times mainly just scouting the lake for brushpiles on my sonar. Even when I find one, it's not easy to fish it if the wind is up more than 5mph in that boat.

Good to hear. I thought the Comanche slough was a secret spot!! LOL I've never fished it, but it looks real good for spawning crappie. Thanks for the report... If the lake is back down to normal, the crappie activity should be close to full swing!! Time to go to the the Extra Secret Sloughs...
